Man kills father, wife in Bengal’s Sonamukhi, accused absconding

Kolkata: In a horrific incident, a man killed his wife and father in West Bengal’s Bankura district and fled the area, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday night in the Mana Char area of Sonamukhi, police added.

The father’s body was found in the courtyard of the house. The incident has spread panic in Sonamukhi’s Mana Char area.

Initial reports suggest that the murder might be linked to ‘Tantra Sadhana’, some occult practices. However, a family dispute in the murder cannot be ruled out either.

According to police and local sources, the accused, identified as Mangal Chowdhury, allegedly attacked his 39-year-old wife, Rumpa, with a sharp weapon and beheaded her. Her severed head was subsequently found at a temple.

The body of his 60-year-old father, Rajendra Chowdhury, was recovered from the courtyard of their house, police said.

According to local residents, Mangal Chowdhury committed this brutal murder on Durga Ashtami. They said after beheading his 39-year-old wife, Rumpa, he kept her head in a temple. Later, the body of his father, Rajendra Chowdhury, 60, was recovered from the backyard of the house.

The police have sent the bodies for autopsy and registered a case against the accused. “A search is on to apprehend him. The family members of his wife have been informed about the incident,” said a senior officer of Bankura district police.

Dayal Patra, a local resident, said, “The husband and wife used to worship together. But this is the first time I have seen such an incident in my life. After killing two people, the man also chased some people with sharp weapons before fleeing the town. The police brought the situation under control.”
