Mangalore Police Foil Interstate Jewelry Theft Ring, Recover Stolen Valuables

Mangalore: In a display of rapid response and inter-departmental cooperation, the Mangalore police have successfully apprehended two individuals from Assam believed to be responsible for a string of apartment burglaries in the Lal Bagh Hat Hill vicinity. The suspects, identified as Abhijit Das, 24, and Deba Das, 21, were taken into custody in Bangalore on the morning of October 21, marking a resolution within 20 hours of the initial crime report.

The case, officially registered at Urwa Police Station as Crime No. 104/2025, dated October 20, 2025, under Sections 331(4), 305(A) B.N.S-2023, stems from a formal complaint lodged by Mr. Riyaz Rashid. Mr. Rashid reported a break-in affecting three separate flats within an apartment complex situated in Derebail village. The burglaries resulted in the loss of jewelry estimated at Rs 20 lakh, a cash sum of Rs 5,000, 3,000 dirhams (equivalent to Rs 70,000), and a mobile communication device.

Responding to the report with immediate action, the Urwa police deployed a team of officers to the affected location, supplemented by a canine unit and fingerprint analysis specialists. Under the supervision of senior law enforcement personnel, a comprehensive investigation was promptly initiated.

The ensuing investigation yielded the identification and subsequent arrest of Abhijit Das and Deba Das in Bangalore. Law enforcement officials successfully recovered all reported stolen items, including jewelry, cash, dirhams, and a mobile phone, all of which were in the accused’s possession.

Police records indicate that Abhijit Das has a documented history of involvement in residential theft incidents, with prior records existing in both Bangalore and his home state of Assam.

Both Abhijit Das and Deba Das have been presented before a judicial authority and subsequently remanded to police custody, enabling further investigation into their activities. Authorities are actively exploring the potential involvement of the accused in other unresolved theft cases within the region and beyond.

The successful resolution of this case is attributed to the coordinated efforts of the DCP (Crime), the Central Subdivision ACP, the officer in charge of the Urwa police station, and their respective teams. Their unwavering diligence and the collaborative partnership established with the Bangalore City Police proved pivotal in the swift apprehension of the suspects and the recovery of the stolen property, underscoring the importance of inter-departmental cooperation in combating interstate crime.
