Mangaluru: Prabhakar Poonja, a prominent figure in Mangaluru and proprietor of the esteemed Hotel Poonja International, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday at the age of 72. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the city’s hospitality sector, leaving a palpable void within the philanthropic communities he diligently supported.

Born into humble beginnings in Mumbai, Mr. Poonja’s life story is a compelling narrative of resilience and unwavering determination. Commencing his professional career at the tender age of 13, he demonstrated an exceptional work ethic and an innate ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. By the age of 24, his tireless efforts had propelled him to a position of influence in Mumbai, where he cultivated a broad network of connections encompassing political figures, members of the entertainment industry, and government officials across both Mumbai and Mangaluru.
At the age of 30, Mr. Poonja made a decisive move to Mangaluru, embarking on his most ambitious project: the establishment of Hotel Poonja International in Hampankatta. The hotel rapidly ascended to become a landmark, emblematic of Mangaluru’s expanding hospitality sector. Currently, the hotel continues to flourish under the capable management of his children, a testament to Mr. Poonja’s visionary leadership and enduring legacy.
Beyond his accomplishments in the business realm, Mr. Poonja maintained a profound connection to his origins. He provided steadfast support to his ancestral village of Bantwal, contributing generously to numerous local temples, orphanages, and various charitable organizations. His philanthropic endeavors touched the lives of countless individuals and reflected his deep-seated compassion for the less privileged within society.
Mr. Poonja was a dedicated father to five children, who, along with his extended family and numerous friends, remember him for his indomitable spirit, unwavering generosity, and the lasting legacy he established within Mangaluru’s hospitality industry. His contributions to the city’s economic and social fabric will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
