Mangaluru: They say that the bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine. And if you learn to ride a bicycle, you will not regret it if you live. Life is like riding a bicycle. In order to keep your balance, you must keep moving. Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike. When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments. Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling. Think of bicycles as ridable art that can just about save the world. I think, the bicycle is the noblest invention of mankind. Whoever invented the bicycle deserves the thanks of humanity. You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a bicycle and that’s pretty close.

And the best thing is that cycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise You can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at any time of the year, and without spending a fortune. Most of us know how to cycle and once you have learned you don’t forget. All you need is a bike, a half an hour here or there when it suits, and a bit of confidence. Cycling is not just fun, but its benefits are enormous.Cycling builds strength in a holistic manner since every single part of the body is involved in cycling.

Cycling increases muscle tone, it builds stamina, improves cardio-vascular fitness, it eats up calories, improves heart health, improves coordination, it reduces stress etc etc. Cycling is a base training activity, and relentless cycling can even bring glory and kudos-just like the following three cyclists who earned laurels for their love, dedication and commitment towards cycling. Kishan Bangera, Donald “Donny” Menezes and Nishanth Chand- these three top cyclists were the proud winners of “Trek Mangaluru Challenge” Award.

Trek Mangaluru Challenge was launched jointly by Jyoti Cycle and Fitness, and Firefox Bikes Pvt Ltd in the month of September 2015 for duration of thirty days. Objective of this challenge was to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of people, who ride their bicycle regularly in Mangaluru. The qualification criterion was- any rider who completes 500 kms with a minimum of twenty riding days and a minimum of 15kms per riding day. The criterion for the winner was anyone who completes 1500 kms with maximum riding days and maximum elevation. Tracking of the challenge was based on updates from Strava application. Nearly 45 participants took part for the challenge, out of which ten riders qualified and three won with exceptional performance.

Champion of the contest was Kishan Bangera who rode all 30 days covering 2792 kms with a whopping 30,526 meters elevation gain. He earned a Trek Gift Voucher worth Rs. 10,000/-. Kishan Bangera is 49 years old, a body builder who has won several accolades at national level in this field. He is employed with Southern Railways and despite his busy work schedule he takes time out for his passion which is cycling. Bangera got other goodies too- his wife gifted him a Cyclocross from Trek worth Rs 1 Lakh, while his 1981 Milagres institution batchmates presented him a cheque for Rs 1 lakh. Apart from that, Ganesh Nayak, the proprietor of Jyoti Cycles and Fitness not happy with Bangera for always riding without a helmet, gifted a helmet through the latter’s son.

Runner Up was Donald “Donny” Menezes who rode all 30 days covering 2391 kms with an elevation gain of 27,899 meters. He earned Trek gift voucher worth Rs. 5,000/-. Dony is 47 years old and a business who accompanies Kishan every day for his cycling activity. He considers Kishan as his Guru! Donny has another achievement on his side during the trek challenge period-he has covered 302 kms in a single day and this makes him the No 1 cyclist in this area who has pedaled highest distance on a single day.

Nishant Chand, who rode all 30 days covering 1641 kms with an elevation of 14514 meters won third place. He earned gift voucher from Trek worth Rs. 2,500/-. He is just 23 years old and works for Air India, a very passionate cyclist and uses this as a commuter for all his petty needs.

Reward and Recognition forum for these winners and qualifiers was held on November 8, 2015 at Jyoti Cycle and Fitness-Kadri Shivabagh, where Chief guest Rammohan Pai Maroor-President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries handed over the awards and certificates. Jyoti Cycles also presented four bicycles- two mountain terrain bikes and two kid’s bikes, to the winners of painting and essay-writing contests organized in association with FireFox.
