In Madikeri at Thimmaiah Circle, the protesters shouted slogans against the state government for celebrating Tipu Jayanti. A commotion was witnessed between two groups which led to stone pelting between them. VHP secretary Kuttappa was severely injured and breathed his last in the hospital. To control the situation, the police used tear gas and resorted to a lathi charge.

Besides strong objections from various organizations, the government stood firm in its decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti and celebrated it in Karnataka.

Madikeri: Tipu birth anniv celebrations: VHP leader dies in violence

Madikeri (K’taka), (PTI): A local VHP leader died and several others, including policemen, were injured as violence erupted over the holding of the birth anniversary celebrations of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.

A youth was also injured in firing by some unidentified persons near here, police said, adding that prohibitory orders have been clamped in the entire Kodagu district and additional reinforcements sent to the area to bring the situation under control.

Police used tear gas shells and resorted to lathicharge as hundreds of people gathered here and clashes erupted between the opponents and supporters of the celebrations.

According to police, one Kuttappa, a VHP leader and a former state government employee, suffered head injuries in stone throwing and died on the spot.

The violence flared up even as statewide celebrations are being held by the government for the first time to commemorate the birth anniversary of Tipu which, however, is being boycotted by BJP amidst opposition by several outfits who see him as a “religious bigot”.

Some outfits in Kodagu district had called for a bandh today to protest against the government’s decision.

Meanwhile, Home Minister G Parameshwara said additional reinforcements were being rushed to Madikeri from Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts and appealed to people to maintain peace.

BJP has announced a “total boycott” of the celebrations, saying that no public representative from their party at any level would participate in the official function.

Further, the party’s state unit chief Prahlad Joshi said that Tipu was a “fanatic” and “anti-Kannada”.

Several organisations and individuals, too, have opposed the state government’s move to celebrate ‘Tipu Sultan Jayanti’ on November 10.

Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore and considered an implacable enemy of the British East India Company. He was killed in May, 1799, while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against British forces.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has defended the government’s decision to commemorate his birth anniversary even as he slammed RSS and “other communal forces” for opposing it.

Mangaluru United Christian Association, too, has protested against the celebrations, alleging that Tipu was responsible for the destruction of many churches in the coastal region and also that Christians were harassed under his rule.

  1. Dear Indians,

Tipu Sultan, the greatest freedom fighter of India no doubt about it.

We should recall the contributions of the Tiger of Mysore during the freedom struggle. “Tipu sacrificed his life fighting against the British. His dedication and sacrifice should be an inspiration to the youth,”

Tipu was among the first to take up arms against the British. He even sacrificed his two children for the cause of the country. Even foreigner know his contribution to the country. Ask any Britishers they will say the contribution of Tipu and his determination to push-out Britisher form India.

According to historians, Tipu was the only king in the history of world who died on the battlefield fighting the enemies of the country. He was the first to introduce and use rockets against country’s enemies.
We should respect his contribution to the county. He is great patriarch. Government would have initiated to celebrated such Jayanti long years back, but better late than never. Current government did justice to great King. the fact everyone know, for the sake of disturb the peace, some ignorant people doing such mischievous act, because he was a Muslim King (here religion play vital role, actually this should not be the case)

See the irony, some vested interest want to celebrate killer of father of nation Godse and disrupt the celebration of great King’s Jayanti. Government should not pay heed to such hypocrite and go ahead with the celebration. I think central govt should think to make Tippu’s Birth anniversary a national celebration and announce government holiday. Hope such good news will come soon. Then only peace prevails under Modi Govt. people could leave with harmony keeping aside all the negative perception among the religion (the main targets are Muslims and Christians)

    • “Tipu sacrificed his life fighting against the British. His dedication and sacrifice should be an inspiration to the youth,” – Mr. Sam

Lol! He might have died at the hands of the Brits. But does that pull down the curtains (for good) and blot out his barbarity?

A GREATER joke no Man hath heard! 🙂 🙂 Some more jokes, if you don’t mind, pl. 🙂

      • If you ppl accept act done by a CM of a state then and now became PM, then there is no need to give any explanation or comment to a closed mind set like you (this is a big joke), it’s like arguing with a fool will not bear fruit.
THE irony is tomorrow you ppl may come and say the current PM is patriarch, but he did all these useless act to retain his power to out of love with country.
AM sure you ppl become NA GARKA NA GATKA…..

  2. You state, sir, “According to historians, Tipu was the only king in the history of world who died on the battlefield fighting the enemies of the country.”

Like you, the historians have done no research. Perhaps they had no more education than our globetrotter.

If you look up the wikipedia for “Monarchs killed in action”, you get more like TWO HUNDRED of them.

So, for you to say that your hero was the only one king to die in battle is a bit preposterous. Perhaps you love your hero more than some research.

We all love our heroes no doubt.

The British that Tipu fought against were the employees of the East India Company. In reality, that did not represent the British government of the time.

But Tipu took help from at least one European Government. The French Government.

There were French soldiers and officials advising Tipu. In fact, if the French were not there, Tipu would not possibly have a quarter of the courage to attack the East India Company’s employees.

Tipu did not sacrifice his two children for the sake of the country. He lost the battle and the children were taken away as a surety – so that he would pay his dues to the East India Company.

But where did he get all that money from to pay the East India Company? He charged heavy taxes from his subjects. Did the subjects willingly pay that tax? I doubt it. Those who could not pay the heavy tax were mercilessly killed by our hero.

If our hero had won against the East India Company, the French would have take the Company’s place, and would have eventually controlled India. Would we then call our hero a traitor – the man who got the French firmly established in Hindustan?

  3. First of all, the so called VHP leader was not killed.. He jumped a wall and hurt himself thereby causing his own death.. Secondly, the Karnataka government had no business in celebrating the birth of a feudal chieftain called Tipu Sultan. He was not a patriot nor a freedom fighter. He fought against the British to save his own empire, nothing more than that. His atrocities against Hindus and Christians have been well documented. If he had contributed anything towards literature, as Mr. Girish Karnad would like us to believe, then his ‘CONTRIBUTION’ should have been acknowledged during one of the Sahithya Sammelans.. The government of Karnataka has plunged itself into the hot soup cauldron..

  4. Dear Mangal Sirji, you are writing the comment as you r a great historian and was minister in French Govt. at that time. Request you to go back to the basic and study history carefully with open mindedness, leave aside IF’s, BUT’s, Could Be, Would Be. Then you will also learn to love our great hero who sacrificed his kingdom to save the country from outsiders.

  5. Tippu Sultan has not only destroyed Christian Churches but he forcibly converted Christians in to Muslim faith, those who opposed this move was eliminated, that is what our elders used to say. Belthangady’s Gadai Kallu was the spot were his Soldiers used to push Christians & Hindus, to their death. St. Aloysius Chapel was erased and its stones were used to build the Mosque at Light house hill Road. Those who celebrate his Birth Centenary should first read the History, then call him Secular, He fought with British not to save India but his own King dome. State Governments move to celebrate his Birth centenary is merely Vote Bank Politics. Our Christian spiritual or Political Leaders should have protested.

  6. “Our spiritual or Political Leaders should have protested” – mcadmin/ Ex Sgt George A Borromeo

Well, it’s not going to happen as they have a very convenient but uncomfortable alliance with Tipu-supporters to oppose sanaathana dharma groups. In their desperation to fight sanaathana groups, they are willing to ignore their own survival and join hands with very dangerous groups. And, the communal Congress fully understands this suicidal nature. They have been playing this community for decades and it will likely to continue for decades to come!! Why do you think AS Beef Mathew, Praveena Pinto, Manga and others are either silent or very wishy washy on this topic? LOL
