Mangaluru: Police Commissioner S Murugan held a press meet at his office here, on December 24.
Addressing the mediapersons, Murugan said that the people in the district are in festive mood and the police department has taken all necessary measures to provide security for the celebrations.
He said that on December 20, some miscreants stopped ‘Dilwale’ movie from screening in Mangaluru. “There was an allegation that due to lack of police protection, the film was stopped by Hindu activists from being screened; this is incorrect. When these activists interrupted the screening, the police reached the spot immediately and assured protection for the movie to be screened. Even though protection was offered, the owners of the theater themselves stopped the screening,” said Murugan.
A meeting was held in this regard with theater owners and the department assured protection in all the possible ways. “We assured to take action against those who create problems for the owners if they screen the movie,” he added.
In this regard, an interested person has filed an FIR against the activists who interrupted the screening.
He further said that some derogatory comments have been made in social media. “We have already warned the person who first posted the derogatory comments and he has deleted them from his page. If anyone has been hurt by the comments, they can come forward and file a case. We will take necessary action.”
When asked why the movie is not being screened in Mangaluru even after assurance of police protection and safety, Murugan replied, “Theaters are public places and people come to watch movies. We have taken all the measures to provide safety and protection to the people as well as the theaters. But, it is the decision of the theater owners to screen the movie or not.”
When asked about the visit of Dr Zakir Naik to Mangaluru, Murugan said, “We have received a memorandum to stop him from coming and it is under investigation.”
