Mangaluru: Apartment culture has been gaining popularity in the city during the past decades, mainly because independent houses are being regarded as unsafe and always prone to theft and crime.

However, recurring cases of theft in apartments, not regularly though, has been worrying the apartment-owners these days.

Two apartments in the Pavan Apartments condominium was targeted by miscreants around the weekend. The apartment on the 4th floor was broken into and gold ornaments weighing 135 gms and silverware, of aggregate value of Rs 3.44 lakh, have been taken away.

Dr Deekshit, living in the apartment, had locked it and gone with family on a visit to Badiadka in Kasaragod district around 4 pm on Dec 27. When they returned around 6-30 pm, the apartment was found broken open.

An apartment on the 6th floor, where Shalini S Hegde lives, was broken open on Dec 28 and gold weighing 40 gms, a silver tumbler and Rs 7,500 were taken away. The act is thought to have taken place between 8-30 am and 2-30 pm. The loss suffered is about Rs 1.05 lakh, according to Shalini Hegde.

Both the thefts are suspected to have been executed by the same group of persons during daytime on Jan 28. They could have been aware of the absence of the occupants in both apartments, said the Kadri police, who are investigating the matter.
