Mangaluru: Two Under-10 Students Die in Separate Rain-related Mishaps in Undivided DK

Mangaluru: Rain-related mishaps claimed two very young lives in DK and Udupi districts on Thursday and Friday.

In Bantwal taluk of DK, heavy rain caused the retaining wall of the road cave in and a huge mass of mud fell on a few houses in Kunjattakal of Ammemar in Pudu village near Farangipet around 8 pm on Thursday.

A rented house in which Haneef and family lived ended totally in ruins. In panic, the family ran in different directions. Haneef’s son Mohammed Arshad (6) ran towards the toilet located at the rear side where a big lump of stones and mud fell over him. Attempts were made to pull him out which lasted an hour. But by then, he had breathed his last.

Haneef is a daily wage-earner, with two sons and three daughters. Minister U T Khader visited the family and consoled them​, while also assuring them of financial assistance and relief.


​Vismaya Devadiga

In Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, Vismaya (9), daughter of Shekhar and Jalaja Devadiga of Maranakatte of Chittur village, got washed away while crossing a foot-bridge across a stream on Friday. The incident happened right in the presence of her mother who was helpless in saving her daughter. She could not be traced even until late in the night.

The makeshift foot-bridge laid across Brahmakunda tributary of river Chakra is made of long arecanut trunks bound together. Vismaya was walking along with her mother towards school located about half a kilometre from their home, where she studied in Standard III.

Shekhar Devadiga also is a daily wage-earner. Vismaya was the younger of his two daughters. The elder studies in Standard X.
