Mangaluru: White Doves, a non-government organization serving the homeless and the destitute, reunited two more women, who were rescued in two different incidents by the correspondent of www.mangalorean.com, with their families.
Mallika along with her 15-month-old child had found lying on the side of the road in a drunken state with no one to take care of the innocent child near the Mangaluru central railway station around 6 pm on October 12. She was rescued after a call was received from a well-wisher of Mangalorean.com. With the permission of the deputy commissioner, the mother and child were handed over to White Doves.
When Mallika was shifted to White Doves, the management of the house found it very difficult to manage her. She used foul language. Yet they treated her with special care and love to reform her.
Speaking to mangalorean.com, White Doves founder Corrine Rasquinha said, “Mallika was very violent in the beginning but after we treated her, she began slowly turning sober and requested us to let her go. While getting the child examined, we came to know that the child suffered from mental illness. On her request, on May 26, we took her to Kumble as she had told us that she hailed from there and had also agreed to show us her house. Based on the leads provided by her, we took her to Kumble. When we reached her home, everyone there was surprised to see her with us.”
Corrine further said that the family members, after accepting her, said that in October, 2014, Mallika had gone to Mangaluru for treatment as her child was suffering from mental illness. But she never returned. “We thought she must have admitted the child to a hospital and she will be back, but she never returned,” they said. They also filed a complaint in the Kumble police station but were unable to trace her.
Mallika used to stay with her brother. After she went missing, her husband also moved out and started to stay separately. The neighbours were surprised to see the changes in Mallika and her child, they could not believe that it was the same Mallika standing in front of her. All were very happy seeing her and thanked Corrine and team for the transformation in Mallika.
In another case, a woman, who had been found near a garbage heap in front of Cascia Church on November 19, was rescued by Team mangalorean and sent to White Doves.
On November 20, the woman revealed her identity and name as Suguna Poojary. She hailed from Mujikoli house in Kalleri of Uppinangady. She was keen on joining her family back in Uppinangady but it was risky to send her alone.
Corrine Rasquinha said, “On May 15, a cop brought a woman from Uppinangady to be admitted in our destitute home at Mannagudda. When the cop said he came from Uppinangady, I thought of asking about Suguna’s whereabouts. When the cop asked, Suguna briefed about her family. The cop assured to bring her family members after a week but he never returned. During the conversation with Suguna, the cop had asked some questions to her. Based on her answers and the information we got, we found her address and dropped her to Uppinangady last week.”
Suguna is staying with her mother and brother. A separate house adjacent to their house has been arranged for Suguna and her family . Suguna’s elder daughter is working in a Dharmasthala-sponsored self-help group, another daughter works in a mobile shop and her son is working abroad.
Suguna’s husband is a taxi driver in Mangaluru. After meeting her family members, Suguna was very happy and thanked White Doves for their help in tracing her family members and reuniting her with her children.
So far White doves has reunited 70 with their families.
