Mangaluru: A young man is said to have attempted to end his life by consuming poison in the very presence of police in the Pandeshwar police station in the early hours of Monday, Mar 16.

Rajesh (20), hailing from Shimoga district, had been accused of eloping with an underage girl. Both were soon apprehended and brought to station late Sunday night. The girl being a minor, she was sent to Prajna Counselling Centre.

The police in the station started questioning Rajesh around 3-15 in the morning. As one of the cops bent down to pick up the walkie-talkie handset which had accidentally fallen down, Rajesh reportedly pulled out a vial of poison from his bag and drank it. He was hospitalized in time and is said to be recovering.

He revealed during interrogation that he and the minor girl were in love and neither of their families approved of it. Both of them are said to have prepared death notes and kept the poison ready in their bags with an idea to commit suicide.

The police are pursuing the case.
