MCC Postpones Programme on Sharia Law due to Section 144 in City

Mangaluru: Due to section 144 CrPC imposed in the city by the police commissioner, we have postponed our programme about the Sharia law, which was supposed to be held on November 15, at the Nehru Maidan”, said the President of Muslim Central Committee Mohammed Masood in a press meet held at Hotel Woodlands here on November 14.

Addressing the mediapersons Masood said, “I do not know on what basis the police commissioner has imposed section 144 CrPC in Mangaluru. The incident occurred in Ullal and already section 144 CrPC has been imposed there but why did they extend it to Mangaluru? On November 13, at around 7:00 pm, police from two police stations approached me to co-operate with them and requested me to postpone the programme. I had no clue about the section 144 being imposed in the city, later I informed all the 30 Muslim organisations about postponing our programme. Some members of the organisations said that they will gather on November 15, at the Nehru Maidan for the programme, but we requested them not to create any problems, instead co-operate with the police department.”

Masood further said, “The police are always targeting Muslim youth and if they come and gather on the ground the police may book them under various sections. We do not want to create any problems. I warn the police, for imposing section 144. When I asked the police why had they imposed Section 144, they do not have an answer. They asked me to talk to the DC, why should I talk to DC? Let them take precautionary measures in Ullal and Thokkottu but not in Mangaluru. We have co-operated with the police department, whatever the police say we will follow. We have organized the convention on Sharia law and about 50000 people from the twin districts and 30 organizations were expected to gather on November 15”.

When asked about questioning section 144, imposed in Ullal and Konaje area as a precautionary measure, Masood said, “From the past 15 days assaults are taking place in Ullal, why did they not impose section 144 in Ullal? why did they not file cases? Why only during our programme in Mangaluru are they imposing section 144?” Masood questioned.

Ibrahim Kodijal, B H Qader, Abbuakka, Rafiuddin, Bhasha, Mohammed Monu, Hamid Kudroli, C M Mustafa, Nawaz, C M Hanif, D M Aslam and others were also present.
