Meryl Streep gets standing ovation at 2017 Oscars

Los Angeles, Feb 27 (IANS) Meryl Streep, who got her 20th Oscar nomination for her leading role in “Florence Foster Jenkins” and was called “highly overrated” by US President Donald Trump, received a standing ovation from the audience at the 89th Academy Awards here.

The annual awards show took place here on Sunday night and Streep lost the Best Actress trophy to Emma Stone’s “La La Land” act.

Kimmel took a jibe at Trump during his opening monologue in defence of Streep and he urged the audience to applaud the veteran actress, reports people.com.

“Meryl Streep has phoned it in for more than 50 films over the course of her lackluster career. She wasn’t even in a movie this year — we just wrote her name in out of habit,” Kimmel joked.

“Please join me in giving Meryl Streep a totally undeserved round of applause. The highly overrated Meryl Streep, everyone,” he added.

After Streep took aim at Trump in her Golden Globes speech in January, Trump criticised her by calling her an “overrated” actress.
