Mangalore International Airport Customs Seize Rs 4.65 Lakh worth Gold Concealed in 4 Magnetic Bracelets from a passenger who arrived at MIA from Dubai

Mangaluru: In spite of quite a few gold busts that have been taking place at Mangalore International Airport, still the passengers coming from Gulf countries are taking the risk in carrying gold illegally, and getting caught and then facing all kinds of inconveniences. In a recent incident taking place on 19 March 2019, the customs officials at MIA busted a new modus operandi of smuggling gold and seized foreign gold of 24-carat purity weighing 142.4 grams valued at Rs 4.65 lakhs from a passenger who arrived at the MIA from Dubai.

The gold was concealed in the form of 32 mercury coated pieces in four magnetic bracelets from the passenger who arrived from Dubai by Spice Jet flight SG60 which he had concealed the gold in check-in luggage. This seizure was made after the recent trend of passengers trying to smuggle gold in paste form stashed in their rectums. Customs on 16 March, 11 March, 9 March and 4 March had cracked cases of passengers trying to smuggle gold paste hidden in their rectums, while on 3 March MIA customs had busted a case where an attempt was made to clandestinely bring in gold concealed as silver coated plate in the heating element of an electric travel cooker.

So what would be the next new modus operandi of smuggling gold- we will have to watch, and it won’t be too long before yet another passenger tries a new idea of smuggling gold?
