Mr Ganesh Rai – Mangalorean Star
Mr. Ganesh Rai, a vibrant personality with a charming character has carved a name for himself in the art world and his talent is much appreciated by art lovers in India and abroad alike. Mangalorean.com team had the unique opportunity of meeting with this art genius and taking a glimpse into his life and career and learn more about him.
Born in the beautiful Kodagu district, well known for its breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, Mr. Rai probably didn’t need to look far for inspiration to pursue his artistic talent. Involving himself in artwork at every opportunity that showed up, Mr. Rai was busy sculpting the Govt. Junior College’s main gateway when a circular sent for the famous CAVA University admission reached his college. Mr. Rai’s talent was showcased to the outer world when this sculpture was unvelied later by Field Marshal K.M. Kariappa and his art work was much appreciated by everyone. It was a moment of great joy for Mr. Rai to be honored by such a great personality. Thus in 1974, Mr. Rai received his first felicitation while he was still in college and he considers it a honour even today to receive this from Field Marshal Kariappa. The event also marked the introduction of colour photography in Kodagu.
Mr. Rai’s talent got a platform when he was sent to CAVA University by the college Principal. At the end of the 5 years course, the young enthusiast had metamorphosed into a professional artist. The course included 3 yrs of drawing and painting studies followed by another 2 yrs of applied courses i.e., photography and sculpturing. Mr. Rai then pursued a Drawing Masters course and joined as a Drawing Teacher at St. Ann’s High School, Virajpet. It didn’t take much time for Mr. Rai to win the hearts of his students and he excelled in his profession at a very young age. Under his guidance, the students won various awards at Taluk, State and National level. Adding a feather to the teachers’ cap was the achievement of one of his physically challenged student who won a Platinum Medal at an International Event held in Japan. The news was published in National papers and was a well deserved honour for the student as well as the teacher.
Mr. Rai cherishes his career as a drawing master. Being a very strict but at the same time a very loveable master, he could win the hearts of many of his students who made him proud by successfully bagging many awards. The Karnataka Best Teachers award was awarded to him in recognition of his successful teaching career.
Even through his teaching career, Mr. Rai kept himself busy and pursued various courses gaining knowledge through the process. Every 3-6 months there would be a refresher course, secretary course, fine arts course, rescue operation course, trekking, mountaineering and the list is endless. Mr. Rai also attended Bharat Scouts and Guides training and became a Scouts master. Of special note and an experience that has etched in his heart was the HAL aeronautics course at Bangalore where Mr. Rai was one among 50 Indians and 1 of 5 Kannadigas to be selected for the course. The course gave him and fellow students a chance to get trained on aircrafts, all planes and helicopters including war flights. They also received training on the signal tower and remote controlling of flights, a once in a lifetime opportunity which will be remembered by him throughout his life.
As he excelled in art work, his talent got well recognized and awards came seeking him. An unforgettable moment was when he was awarded the district Rajyotsava award in 1987 by the then Chief Minister of Karnataka late Gundu Rao. He is also the recipient of Karnataka Best Teacher award received from Pejavar Mathadeesh. Karnataka Sangha Sharjah has honoured Mr Rai with Mayura Award in 2009 and Karnataka Sangha Dubai has bestowed Prathiba Puraskara Award-2009 on him for his contribution to the field of art.
Although he had learnt and mastered himself in paintings, drawings, photography and sculpturing, it was when he watched the movie Jurassic park, that he developed a wish to enter the graphics world. The movie changed the lifeline for Mr. Rai who then developed a keen interest in graphic designing. He also remembers the classic Malgudi days serial where the cinema techniques were amazing. He went to Sanket studio and checked the movie making process over there. At the same time Zee TV was advertising an animation/graphic designing course which he was very interested in pursuing but the cost for the course set him back. His enthusiasm to learn computers brought him to Dubai where his sister lived. Thus his journey in Dubai started with learning computer basics and then learning advanced graphic functions. He owes his gratitude to Dubai for being the land that made his dream to learn graphic designing come true. Taking small steps as well as giant leaps, in the last 15 years he has progressed enormously in his field and his artwork has received a lot of appreciation. His tagline ‘We convert your imagination into reality’ was not just a statement but the guiding principle of his profession which he has duly fulfilled. As his talent got recognized, many organizations got in touch with him to work on their projects and this gave him an opportunity to get acquainted with several people.
Whenever, Mr Rai designs a logo, souvenirs or banners or even stage settings, he makes sure that it depicts the tradition and culture of the organization for which it is created. According to him, when an audience looks at the stage, the view should be able to give them a feeling of being present on that occasion as if it were in their hometown. A strong supporter of Kannada language, Mr. Rai urges that Kannadigas should work together in propagating our language and understand its value. Reminiscing his lifetime at Kodagu, where at least one person from a family is sent to the military service to protect the nation, Mr. Rai regards himself a soldier of Kannada language leading the mission to keep the language evergreen.
Some talents are learnt, some are inherited and some more come to us by experience. Same holds true for Mr. Rai where he applied his vast experience in the field of art work to create technical movements on still sculptures. Considering Madikeri Dasara as his art work laboratory, Mr. Rai introduced his innovations to the audience during the festival which was overwhelmingly appreciated by the audience. One of his creations where he created a Ganesha moorthy with technical movements and Ganesha’s vehicle Mooshika beating the drum which synchronized with the background music was hugely appreciated by the crowd. Sculpting an idol is not an easy job- it involves a lot of hard work and it is mandatory to learn shilpa shastra and all the techniques including the poojas so that the idol when created has the holy power within it. Mastering all the traditional techniques and through his hard work and dedication, Mr. Rai has over the years crafted numerous idols for various holy occasions.
Mr. Rai believes that every religion has its own traditional values and all religions should be respected. According to him all traditions should be followed. While in UAE, he tries to attend all the poojas that takes place in UAE and whenever someone needs help, he is always there to support them. ‘Sarve Jana Suknino Bhavantu’ being his guiding statement, he has done his bit to serve the society by involving in several social service programmes, notably blood donation camps. He has worked behind organizing many blood donation camps and also takes a lead increasing awareness in the masses about this noble service. Being ever grateful to the land that supported him, Mr. Rai states that this is the only way he is able to return the favour. Knowing that donating blood not only helps the person who receives the blood but also is a health benefit for the person who donates as it gives an opportunity to recycle the blood in the body, Mr. Rai tries to instill this knowledge into the minds of the people he communicates with. Whenever he attends a programme, Mr. Rai takes the opportunity to educate the people on this noble cause and to motivate them into blood donation.
Speaking of his profession, Mr. Rai has worked on several art works for various organizations. One such job that was highlighted was when Pakistan Education Academy chose him to design their souvenir. His work was so well appreciated that they contacted him to design their souvenir for the next year also. He owes his thanks to the Principal, Board of Directors, teachers of the organization who specially respect him for his talent. Another proud achievement is the designing of the Indian Consulate Exit certificate during the amnesty period. The work included incorporating the topmost secret code words into the certificate and being chosen for this mission was a great achievement in itself. Other notable jobs accomplished are the HSBC calendar and the cover page for the 100 yrs souvenir for Karnataka Police Sangha. In this book, he has even contributed towards an article on Post mortem.
Mr. Rai’s talent does not restrict to artwork alone but he has also excelled in penmanship and one of his literary achievements is the book ‘Sadhane’ which includes interviews of all well known UAE Kannadigas. The book was published in Kannada and even has a directory of contacts for the persons listed. Another achievement is the book ‘Kaveri Amara Chitra Katha’ a pictorial book narrating the story of River Cauvery. He has also created ‘Kodagu Panorama’ a tourist guide brochure giving all information about Kodagu in the most comprehensive way. Currently he is working on a biography of Mr. B.R. Shetty, an eminent personality in the UAE and the book is titled ‘Hejje Gurutu’- foot steps.
Mr. Rai’s father was working for Government service and although he was not born into an artist’s family, his parents had supported his talent since childhood and he is grateful towards his parents for providing good education. However, Mr.Rai’s talent is inherited by his children Monish and Aishwarya both excelling in academics as well as in the arts field. Both his children are well trained Bharatanatyam dancers and his son has also mastered Tabla and Mridanga. Both Monish and Aishwarya have won several first prizes in the events participated including Bharatanatyam, drawing, painting, etc. and they have been presenting the first programme at the Bunts Sangha in UAE for several years. A strong supporter of native language, Mr. Rai has set an example to others by adopting the culture at home by teaching his children Tulu as well as Kannada. Due to his efforts, his children are now well versed in Kannada, Tulu, English and Hindi and have successfully performed the task of MC on various occasions. A loving wife and a caring mother, Mrs. Manjula Ganesh Rai has been supporting everyone from behind the scenes and providing them with the much needed charming atmosphere at home.
Mr. Rai has held several art exhibitions in India. He has received hundreds of felicitations. His creations are never copied and they are a figment of his own imagination. His dedication and hardwork has awarded him the fame that he well deserves. Although achieving to such a great extent, Mr. Rai humbly mentions that all that he has learnt is just a drop in the ocean of knowledge and there is a lot more to learn. He owes all his creativity to his teachers and believes that all that he has achieved is due to the gift that was bestowed upon him by his teachers. He does not forget to mention his heartfelt thanks to all his well wishers and friends and to all his organizers who had trust in his capabilities.
Mr. Rai has achieved a lot in his career and life over the past few years. There are more missions to be accomplished and Mangalorean.com wishes him all the success in all his future endeavors.

Rocky D\’Souza, Brahmavar, India:
Mr Rai’s achievements know no bounds, they cross all the borders of this land and the universe. His shining genius, dedication and commitment are examples to emulate. He has made every body proud, including the place of his wife Madam Manjula who is the daughter of Madam Sarojini and Sanku Shetty, I guess. In fact Brahmavar itself feels proud of celebrating the event of their 25th Marriage Anniversary as learnt on the 10th of May 2015 at Vishnumurthy Temple at Agrahara (Near Sugar Factory in Brahmavar), a stone’s throw from the house of Ganesh Rai’s wife’s first house that of her parents where the event is scheduled to take place. I feel humble and wish everything best to come his way and he becomes a luminary in the art firmament making us also proud of him saying that he is our man. Hats off to this great genius !

Congratulations Ganeshanna, Wish you all the best. You are indeed a Star.
Mr. Ganesh Rai, a vibrant personality with a charming character has carved a name for himself in the art world and his talent is much appreciated by art lovers in India and abroad alike’- the rightly written intro gives the hidden creative energy of this unassuming & very deceptive persona who is a friend of all in this part of the world.
Very ‘deceptive’ in a positive sense as many of us do not know those natural talents imbibed in his self. He is an artist, sculptor, painter, designer, organizer, social worker, teacher, writer, orator, leader and above all a true friend. His love towards the State & its language is worth emulating. His energy is always high as his spiritual attainment.
The man who always loved to work behind the scene was suddenly pushed to the limelight due to hand of destiny which in itself is hailed as blessing in disguise to fledgling Karnataka Sangha Sharjah when he took over the helm of affairs from the ever esteemed founder. Later he embarked on many innovative events which propelled the Sangha that being hailed as one of the leading Socio-cultural organization of Kannadigas in the Gulf.
As Mr.Gopinath wrote Mr.Rai is “All purpose utility man” in UAE who never says ‘no’ to any work which entrusted to him that relates to Karnataka culture & language. That doesn’t confine his service to Karnataka alone; he is the most sought after man by many organizations as he believes culture & professionalism has no bounds. As is his boundless energy.
We thank mangalorean.com for showcasing his innumerable achievements & timeless creations which has decorated the cultural milieu of the Emirates & Karnataka.
Patriotic Ganesh Rai is true soldier of Karnataka and while congratulating him on this occasion, we wish him great laurels in the future years.
