Mulki Double Murder Case: Accused Sentenced to Life Imprisonment; Court Imposes Rs 2 Lakh Fine
Mangaluru: In a gruesome case dating back to April 29, 2020, the Hon’ble Court has delivered its verdict in the Mulki double murder case, sentencing the accused, Alphons Saldanha, to life imprisonment. The case, registered as SC No. 69/2020, pertains to the murder of Vincy alias Vincent D’Souza and Helen D’Souza alias Helen Rosie Rodrigues in the Muthayyakkere Agindakadu area of Elinje village, Mulki taluk. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the accused.
The prosecution’s case rested on the premise that the murders were a result of a heated dispute between the accused and the victims over the cutting of tree branches. According to the investigation, Alphons Saldanha invited his neighbor, Vincy D’Souza, to his residence on the pretext of initiating a compromise meeting to resolve the aforementioned conflict. During the course of the meeting, an argument ensued, culminating in the accused stabbing Vincent D’Souza with a knife, resulting in his immediate death.
Upon witnessing the assault on her husband, Helen D’Souza rushed to his aid. However, the accused, Alphons Saldanha, pursued her and inflicted fatal stab wounds, leading to her death at the scene.
Following the double murder, the Mulki Police Department registered a case (Crime No. 31/2020) invoking Sections 341, 504, 506, and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The investigation was spearheaded by the then Mulki Police Inspector, Jayarama D. Gowda, who meticulously gathered evidence and subsequently filed the charge sheet before the court. ASI Umesh K. and Head Constable Vadiraaj (No. 725) provided crucial assistance during the investigative process.
The trial, presided over initially by Mallikarjun, Judge of the 1st Additional District and Sessions Court, was concluded by the present 2nd Additional District and Sessions Court Judge, Jagadeesh. After a thorough examination of the evidence and arguments presented, Judge Jagadeesh delivered the judgment on January 19, 2026, finding the accused guilty of the charges and sentencing him to life imprisonment, in addition to the monetary fine of Rs 2 lakh.
Public Prosecutor Judith Olga Margaret effectively argued the case on behalf of the prosecution, presenting compelling evidence and legal arguments to support the charges against the accused. MPC Kavya of Mulki Police Station provided essential support during the court proceedings, ensuring the smooth administration of justice. The sentencing brings closure to a tragic episode that deeply affected the community of Elinje village.
