Muslim Women Protest against Triple Talaq Bill in Shivamogga City
Shivamogga: Hundreds of Muslim women clad in Hijab Holding placards stepped out of their houses in Shivamogga and participated in a march to protest against the Centre’s Triple Talaq bill here on Saturday, February 24.
The morcha was organized by the Social Democratic Party of India Shivamogga wing. Participants demanded the bill to be scrapped and the government not to interfere in the Islamic law. A memorandum was submitted to the DC.
The Lok Sabha last year passed the Muslim women (protection of rights on marriage) bill 2017, which criminalizes the practice of Talaq-e-Biddat wherein Muslim men divorce their wives by uttering the word “talaq“ thrice. The bill is currently pending in Rajya Sabha.
They also warned that any interference in the Muslim personal law would not be tolerated. “The Government cannot force Muslims to follow other communities on issues related to personnel laws as it would amount to an infringement of their fundamental rights” they added.
