National Youth Sunday 2026 Celebrated in Diocese of Shimoga
Shivamogga: The Yuvamitra Youth Commission of the Diocese of Shimoga celebrated National Youth Sunday 2026 on August 23 at Good Shepherd Church, Gopala, Shivamogga, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The theme for the celebration was inspired by John 16:33: “Do not be afraid, I have overcome the world.”
The day began with an energetic ice-breaking session conducted by the ICYM DEXCO and YCS/YSM DTS, followed by a solemn opening prayer led by the Liturgy Team. The celebration was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp, symbolising light, hope, wisdom and the presence of God.
Ms. Lenny D’Sa, ICYM Diocesan President, delivered the welcome address. She warmly welcomed the dignitaries, deanery and unit directors, parish youth, DEXCO and DTS teams, and the 185 participants who had gathered from different parts of the diocese.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Rev. Fr. Simon Pinto, Diocesan Commission Coordinator; Rev. Fr. Stephen Maxi Albuquerque, Parish Priest of Good Shepherd Church and Chancellor of the Diocese of Shimoga; Rev. Fr. Christu Raj Neelgal, SDB, Carmel Deanery Youth Director; Rev. Fr. Franklin D’Souza, Diocesan Youth Director; Sr. Lenny D’Costa, YCS/YSM Lady Animator; Ms. Lenny D’Sa, ICYM Diocesan Youth President; Mr. Suhas Martin, ICYM National General Secretary; Mr. Rexin Pinto, YCS/YSM Diocesan President; and resource persons Mr. Deon and members of the MFC Youth Team.
Addressing the gathering on the topic ‘Manavana Ghanate’ (Human Dignity), Rev. Fr. Simon Pinto emphasised that “AI shouldn’t make us less human.” He encouraged the youth to uphold human dignity, values and relationships in an increasingly technology-driven world.
The highlight of the morning was a spiritual sharing and musical enrichment session led by the MFC Youth Team from Bengaluru, comprising Mr. Deon, Revan, Annalise, Philip, Anthea and Rhea. They led the participants in action songs, praise hymns and worship. Deon also delivered a brief reflection on God’s merciful love manifested through Jesus Christ and how Christ helps and inspires young people during times of suffering and crisis. Deon, Philip and Anthea shared their personal testimonies, inspiring the participants through their experiences and lively interaction.
The afternoon session began with a presentation by the DEXCO and DTS teams, followed by cultural programmes and group activities facilitated by Rev. Fr. Christy Raj. The activities were designed to foster interpersonal relationships and strengthen collaboration among young people from different parishes. Fr. Raj also highlighted the importance of leadership in youth organisations.
The session concluded with engaging group discussions, during which participants exchanged views on the benefits and challenges of various approaches. The discussions enhanced the spirit of fellowship and celebration that marked the National Youth Sunday observance.
Fr. Fr. Franklin D’Souza, Diocesan Youth Director, expressed special appreciation to all Parish Youth Presidents for their active leadership and participation. The spirit of unity was captured in the message: “From different parts, ONE DIOCESE; Different cultures, languages, ONE FAITH; ONE IN JESUS – DIOCESE OF SHIMOGA YOUTH.”
The prize distribution ceremony for the video-making competition based on the theme of National Youth Sunday followed. The competition gave young people a chance to showcase their creativity and enthusiasm. The ICYM Unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Tirthahalli, secured first place, while Christ the King Church, Jog Falls, won second place.
In his concluding message, Fr. Franklin D’Souza encouraged the youth to lead lives marked by faith, courage, service and hope.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Rexin Pinto, President of YCS/YSM. Ms. Sheethal Britto and Mr. Melvin D’Cunha served as masters of ceremonies throughout the event.
The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment among the young people to uphold Christian values and become witnesses to God’s love. The participants drew inspiration from Blessed Carlo Acutis’ words, “Always remember that you are unique and precious in the eyes of God,” and Pope Francis’ inspiring declaration, “You are the now of God.”
