NDA’s P.H. Poojar files nomination for Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman post

Bengaluru:  P.H. Poojar, a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council and the NDA alliance candidate for the post of Chairman of the Legislative Council, has filed his nomination papers with the Legislative Council Secretary Jyoti.

Poojar filed his nomination on Thursday in the presence of Legislative Council Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and Opposition Chief Whip N. Ravikumar, along with other NDA legislators, who extended their support to his candidature.

Members of the Legislative Council from both NDA parties were also present during the nomination filing.

The election for the Chairman’s post is expected to be held on Friday during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Karnataka Legislature.

P.H. Poojar (Prahlad H. Pujari) is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Karnataka, representing the local authorities constituency.

He is an entrepreneur and agriculturist from the Bagalkot-Vijayapura region.

He is active in North Karnataka politics, particularly in Bagalkot and Vijayapura districts.

It can be noted that Congress MLC Salim Ahmed filed his nomination for the post of Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council.

Ahmed submitted his nomination papers at the office of the Legislative Council Secretary in the presence of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Earlier, the BJP MLCs held a meeting under the leadership of the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and discussed about the development and election to the post of the Chairman of the Legislative Council.

Former Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti had said he had to sign his resignation letter under compulsion, alleging that he was not given the opportunity to resign on the day he had planned.

Horatti said he had conveyed all details regarding his resignation to the Governor, but had not received any communication confirming whether his resignation had been accepted.

“I have conveyed everything to the Governor in this regard. The Governor has not given me any intimation. He has not stated whether I have been relieved or whether my resignation has been accepted. As far as I know, if I have been appointed as the pro-tem Chairman, it means my resignation has been accepted,” Horatti said.

He expressed disappointment over the state government’s handling of the issue and said he was hurt by the developments.

“I am pained by the move of the state government. I have not done anything wrong. I am saddened. I have been in the House for 46 years and have rendered my services. I had to resign under a compulsive situation. I did not want a confrontational situation,” he said.
