New Heart-New Life! Faisal celebrates ‘First B-day’ of His IInd Phase of Life

New Heart-New Life! Faisal Byari celebrates ‘1st B-day’ of His 2nd Phase of Life, after Heart Transplant at the age of 31

Mangaluru: Heart failure is a serious condition, but still not very well managed in our country. Although the Western countries are quite advanced in managing this subset of patients, the awareness about this in India is far from satisfaction. When device therapy is very expensive for our patients with end-stage heart failure, heart transplantation is in its infancy. We need more awareness to improve organ donation in our society.

For 31 year old Faisal Byari hailing Kundapur, it was his first birthday In fact, it was on July 8, 2016, he had got a fresh lease of life after undergoing a successful heart transplant at Manipal Hospitals in Bengaluru. He celebrated the ‘first birthday’ of his second phase of life by cutting the cake along with Manipal Heart Institute Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Department Head Dr N S Devananda during the press meet held at Mangalore Press Club.

Addressing the media persons, Dr NS Devananda said, ” Faizal Byari hailing from Kundapur was born with a complex heart problem called ‘Single ventricle’ in which there will be only one main pumping chamber instead of normal two. He also had switching of the main blood vessels(arteries) of the heart with reduced blood flow to the lungs which made him blue. He could not play at school or be physically active. By the time he could seek medical advice, it was quite late. The valves inside the heart were leaking badly and he was told that no surgery was possible. As his breathlessness worsened, he was put on medications and his blood was let out periodically to keep it thin in the circulation. He could not even do his day to day activities. “

“He was seen by Dr.Ranjan Shetty, Cardiologist, Manipal Hospitals reassessed and referred to me for any possible intervention. After going through all his reports, I and along with team of doctors decided that only a heart transplantation could help him. All the necessary work up was done and he was enrolled on the waiting list for a heart transplant. For his good luck, a suitable donor was available at another hospital in Bengaluru. Faizal was immediately called from Udupi. As he was wheeled into the operating room, the donor heart was harvested at the donor hospital by my team and shifted to Manipal hospitals, under green corridor. The sick heart from Faizal’s chest was removed and the new heart was sutured into place. The overall procedure took just around 6 hours. He had a smooth recovery and was discharged after 15 days.” added Dr Devananda.

He further said, ” Manipal hospitals has successfully performed many heart transplants, but the case of Faisal was very complex and first of its kind in Karnataka, and we are happy that we succeeded in giving a new life to Faizal. Today as Faizal completes his first year with new heart and new life, we celebrate his rebirth. He is leading a normal life with his family. A heart transplant has made him so fit, he is doing all those things which he could not do through childhood. Today, we also salute all those brave families who have come forward to donate the organs of their loved ones to make many others live a better life.”

Faisal expressing his heartfelt gratitude said, ” The heart transplant has brought a miracle in his life.I am confident and perfectly alright now. I wake up in the wee hours every day to pray and jog actively after one year of a heart transplant. It was a beautiful journey post one year of my heart transplant. Dr Devananda and his team were extremely dedicated towards my case and have provided the best treatment when I got rejected from every other hospital. Now I am confident of doing all activities. I am indebted to Manipal Hospitals and doctors who have given me a new life,”
