New Delhi, June 17 (IANS) The Centre on Wednesday said union Minister Sushma Swaraj, who helped former IPL chief Lalit Modi procure documents to travel to Portugal last year for his cancer-stricken wife’s treatment, did no corruption or impropriety.

“We stand very firmly. There is no allegation of corruption or any impropriety. The people of India trust us,” union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference while replying to a question about the Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi row.

“As far as impropriety is concerned, on Sushmaji, I don’t buy it. Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh have explained all. It was just a case of compassionate intervention,” he added.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday got strong backing from Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who termed all allegations against her as “baseless”.

Reacting over Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, whose name also cropped up in the controversy, Prasad said the details would have to be looked into.

“Vasundharaji has spoken slightly yesterday… I am sure she will revert back,” he said, adding: “There was, however, no signature on the documents shown yesterday (Tuesday).”
