Udupi: Those organising private programmes in private property need not seek permission by submitting applications said Priyanka Mary Francis deputy commissioner Udupi district.

Speaking at a Press meet held at the DC office on April 3, she said that Marriages, Birthday celebrations and others events without political agenda do not require the permission of polling officials.

However, if the private programmes are conducted in public places like Kalyana Mantapa, Auditoriums etc the organisers need to obtain permission, including permission for the use of loudspeakers, from the authorities, she said.

Meanwhile, organisers of non-political programmes, including the staging of Yakshagana, have to submit an undertaking to the Returning Officer or to the local authority/police station that the programme is not being conducted for any political purpose. There is no need to obtain permission from Returning Officers for such programmes, he said.

A single window centre will be opened in the election office in every assembly constituency in order to expedite approval for organizing public programmes. People need not approach the Deputy Commissioner for permission, she said.

the Election commission has decided to organize a special drive to enroll women and people with disabilities as voters. A “Minchina Nondani” (quick registration), drive will be held on April 8 at all designated polling stations in the district. The special one-day camp will be organized from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm this Sunday. However, the last date for applying has been extended to April 14, giving people another chance to enroll. Anyone applying after that cannot vote in the May 12 elections, she said.

The Election Commission’s surveillance and flying squads have seized Rs 99435 worth liquor in the district. The district administration has also suspended the license of 6 bars that have violated the model code of conduct since March 27 when the model code of conduct came into force across the district, she added.
