Not cut out to run around trees, says Vinay Pathak

Mumbai, Aug 22 (IANS) Versatile actor Vinay Pathak admires those who make commercial cinema look great, but he says he does not consider himself cut out for “running around trees”.

“I really don’t do commercial cinema. Not because I look down upon them or anything, but I think I am little inadequate to be part of cinema where I feel false. I feel it’s not real… running around the trees,” Vinay told IANS here.

“People who make it work, who make it look real, are the people who I actually admire. It’s an art, it’s a skill and everybody doesn’t have that,” he added.

Vinay says he is a huge admirer of “Johnny Gaddaar” director Sriram Raghavan, who makes films in the commercial space but still manages to avoid making them look completely commercial.

“Apart from few commercial films, I am known for films like ‘Dasvidaniya’, ‘Chalo Dilli’, ‘Johnny Gaddaar’, ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’. Sriram still pulls me to do his film and I love to work with him.

“It looks like he makes commercial films, but I think he doesn’t… and that’s the beauty of filmmaking. I like that,” the 48-year-old said.

Meanwhile, the actor will be seen in the critically acclaimed film “Island City” — a Ruchika Oberoi directorial which had its world premiere at the 72nd Venice Film Festival 2015 in the Venice Days section, where it won the FEDEORA (Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean) Award for Best Debut Director.

The movie, which also features Tannishtha Chatterjee, is releasing on September 2. It connects three stories — two black comedies and a tragic-comic tale of love showing an ever-changing city in a time of uneasy transition.

Vinay says he knew that the film would struggle to get a lot of screens.

“I knew it will struggle to get maximum screens. I didn’t think it will only be a festival film. I feel every film has the right to release. It’s a very special film and I hope the audience likes it,” he said.

“Island City” also features Amruta Subhash and Chandan Roy Sanyal.
