Panambur Police Commended for Heroic Intervention, Averting Suicide Attempt Near Kuloor Bridge

Mangaluru: In a commendable display of swift action and humanitarian concern, the Panambur police department successfully intervened to prevent a suicide attempt near the Kuloor Bridge this evening, saving the life of a distressed individual.

The incident unfolded when a farmer, hailing from a village near Shravanabelagola in the Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district, was apprehended attempting to leap into the Phalguni River. According to official reports, the man had been grappling with persistent health issues and minor financial setbacks, factors that are believed to have contributed to his state of despair.

Earlier in the day, the individual had departed his residence without informing his family, though he maintained his mobile phone in an active state. Throughout the day, concerned family members and relatives made repeated attempts to contact him, pleading for his return. However, he steadfastly refused to disclose his whereabouts, explicitly communicating his intent to end his life.

The gravity of the situation escalated when relatives ascertained his proximity to Panambur Beach. In a desperate plea for assistance, they contacted Panambur Police Inspector Saleem Abbas at approximately 5:30 PM through the intervention of a retired police officer.
Upon receiving the urgent request, Inspector Saleem Abbas immediately apprised his senior officers and mobilized a search operation. Collaborating with the technical unit of the Police Commissioner’s Office, law enforcement personnel meticulously tracked the man’s movements. Concurrently, efforts were made to counsel him over the phone, though he remained unresponsive to these attempts at solace.

After an intensive and unwavering search spanning nearly ninety minutes, the police team successfully located the individual around 7:00 PM near Kuloor Bridge. Their arrival was critically timed, as he was reportedly on the verge of precipitating himself into the river.

Despite the location falling within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Kavoor police station, and thus outside Panambur’s direct purview, the officers acted with commendable decisiveness, prioritizing the preservation of a human life above all else. Following the rescue, the man was transported to the Panambur Police Station, where he was provided with sustenance and water. Officers engaged him in extensive counselling, emphatically reiterating that suicide is not a viable solution to life’s challenges and actively worked to restore his confidence. Subsequently, he was safely reunited with his relatives, who had journeyed from his hometown.

The family members expressed profound gratitude and sincere appreciation for the Panambur police, acknowledging their instrumental role in saving their loved one’s life.

This incident marks a continuation of the Panambur police’s exceptional record of life-saving interventions. Notably, in November of the preceding year, the department garnered widespread recognition for rescuing a father and his four-year-old daughter. In that instance, the man had disseminated a WhatsApp video threatening suicide and subsequently attempted self-harm at his residence after purportedly planning to jump into the sea at Tannirbavi Beach.

With the recent rescue of the Hassan-based farmer, the Panambur police have now, through their timely intervention and unwavering alertness, successfully preserved a third precious life within a six-month period.

Senior police officials have lauded the commendable efforts of the entire team. The operation was executed under the exemplary leadership of Panambur Police Inspector Saleem Abbas, ably supported by Sub-Inspector Jnanashekar, ASI Subrahmanya, and dedicated staff members, including Surendra, Deepak, Imtiyaz, Rakesh, Fakkiresh, Sharan Basava, Anwar, Manjunath, and others.
