Park Illegally on Falnir Road, Pay Legally with Fines
Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Traffic Police have launched a special drive against unauthorized parking on Mother Teresa (Falnir) Road, mainly near Unity Health Complex and booked a cases against offenders.To prevent bottlenecks, parking will be allowed only on one side of the road. Moreover, it would be parallel parking. Even after Police have alerted that motorists should not park near Unity Health Complex, people have been still ignoring the No Parking sign, thereby getting slapped with hefty fines.
According Sanjeev M. Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), that traffic bottlenecks were being created as a result of haphazard parking of four-wheelers all along the road, which houses several hospitals and clinics. The police have been getting innumerable complaints from the public about the menace, he had said. To prevent bottlenecks, parking will be allowed only on one side of the road. Moreover, it would be parallel parking.
No horizontal parking of four-wheelers would be allowed, and necessary signboards would be installed soon. Parking would completely be banned at stretches where roads curve. As far as two-wheelers are concerned, a vacant space next to Unity Hospital is being identified and Mangaluru City Corporation will be requested to fill up the area to facilitate parking. As of today, the area near Unity Hospital looks clean, with many of the motorists getting the message not to park their vehicles.
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, SI Ramachandra from Kadri East Traffic police station said, ” In spite of warning not to park their vehicles, people have been ignorant in breaking the laws. Many give lame excuses that they were not aware of the new rules, but we simply ignore their excuses. We have seen people parking their vehicles for hours, and go shopping or do some other errands, but tell us that had been to Unity hospital to see a patient. Sorry, we don’t accept such excuses. We are following DCPs orders, and will continue to fine motorists breaking the laws”.
Motorists got slapped with hefty fines like Rs 300, for parking illegally, Obstruction to traffic and no proper documents; Rs 500- for parking illegally, obstruction to traffic and parking over two-three hours. One motorist from Kasaragod who had parked his Toyota Innova for over three-four hours was fined Rs 500- but kept on arguing with the cops, but no luck, he ended up paying the fine. While the traffic was congested in that area, a 4 No bus bearing licence plate K 20 B 2819 came over-taking a blocked the traffic coming from the opposite direction – the photo of the bus taken by Team Mangalorean was shown to SI Ramachandra, who assured of taking action against the driver.
Besides these, finding heavy goods vehicles were entering the city as well via Falnir Road during the day despite a ban imposed, the police restricted them from plying through Falnir road, and warned them not to do so in future. Their entry would strictly be regulated, as per DCP. Drive against unauthorized parking would continue on a daily basis in the city henceforth as per SI Ramachandra of Kadri East Traffic Police.
It is also learnt that the police have identified at least 69 commercial buildings in the city that have contravened building by-laws as far as underground parking space is concerned and will write to Mangaluru City Corporation to set things in order. Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekar speaking to media said that diversion of basement parking space in buildings for commercial activities has resulted in parking of vehicles on public roads and pavements thereby hindering smooth flow of traffic. Hence the move. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Sanjeev M. Patil said that the police would not hesitate to book cases against vehicles parked on roads and pavements near buildings whose basements have been diverted for other uses. The traffic situation in the city has become alarming and the police cannot be mute spectators, he said.
The traffic police held a meeting with city and service bus operators and drivers after the commissioner received a host of public complaints on the way buses are driven on the city roads. Over 70 per cent of complaints received from the public during the phone-in related to rash driving, blaring horns, discourtesy to commuters, and the like. Also, operators said that some of the bus routes have to be reorganized as per the original permit after roads in the city have been widened.
As per directed by DCP Patil, the traffic police have continued their drive against motorists violating one-way near Yekkur Junction here. The police booked five cases and seized three vehicles. For the past three days, the police have been carrying out the drive near Yekkur Junction and registering cases against motorists violating the one-way rule, on their way to Kendriya Vidyalaya. The police on Wednesday also booked 223 cases against motorists riding without helmets and collected Rs. 22,300 in fine. As many as 54 parking violation cases were booked.
So BEWARE! Stop parking your vehicles on Falnir Road, if you want to avoid paying HEFTY fines!
Hey Rampa…. when you come down next, pl. don’t park ANHYWHERE faintly close to Falnir road. I mean, for your 1990 model TVS/Luna, the fine might be a few Rupaiyyahs/month. However, I don’t know if you could afford EVEN that. So, plz, Rampa.
Bravo Traffic Police Department!! Fixing Wheel Locks!! Easy job, isn’t it? Install “No Parking” signs everywhere, but what about “Yes Parking” signs? Do nothing about the fact that the whole Falnir road doesn’t have even one building with basement parking. New buildings are still being given license without basement parking lots. There are private consultation clinics of about 50 Doctors in this road. Considering each Doctor has 4 patients waiting for him/her at the Clinic, we can work out the arithmetic which shows the failure of our system. Do not threaten us with Wheel Locks, just tell us where to park. Simple.. Isn’t it??

Those doctors will learn a lesson when patients stop coming due to parking issue. I am not supporting the lack of regulatory work. At least these traffic police have finally started doing their job. Don’t give them any excuses. LOL

We all very well know that, unlike fairy tales, in real life it’s always the weaker section which learns the proverbial lesson (or suffers); in this case the patients. We cannot visit hospital OPD during office hours, hence go to Clinics. Changing Doctor is neither easy nor recommended especially in case of critical ailments /Senior Citizens/ Children. So what are our options?
So as I said earlier, my message to Traffic Police Department is – Don’t threaten us with Wheel Locks, just tell us “where to park”.

When the construction stated over 3 decades ago our city planners should have clearly marked and enforced a blue print to build a great city. But in most part it stayed only on paper, and regrettably “The Subse Bada Ruappya” that passed under the table had its way over the plan, and today it remains just a plan.
