Patient in B’lore who received Leena Binoy’s Liver Dies within 24 hours of Transplant

Mangaluru: Leena Binoy, aged 42, who was the director of Euro-Kids Pre-School near Kaprigudda (Near KMC mens Hostel) here who had met with a road traffic accident on July 1, 2015 at around 4.30 p.m. at Valencia was immediately shifted to Fr Muller’s hospital, but later in the night, her family decided to shift her to A J Hospital & Research Centre. She was declared brain dead on 2nd July 2015. It was the family’s wish that her organs be donated. Soon after learning the family’s wish, it was immediately conveyed to the Zonal Co-Ordination Committee of Karnataka who in turn activated the Retrieval Team and the recipient list for the organs.

After necessary legal clearances the Organ Retrieval Team of ZCCK came from Bangalore to retrieve the organs. Liver, Kidneys and Cornea had being harvested. Liver was transported to Bengaluru, which had left A J Hospital premises at 12.00 noon on 3 July 2015. Green corridor was created both at Mangaluru and Bengaluru. On the same day her Kidney was taken to Bengaluru at 3:30pm from AJ Hospital.

Now it is learnt that on Saturday, doctors at PMSSY hospital, Bengaluru were disappointed a lot as the patient who underwent the first liver transplant in the facility died within 24 hours of the surgery. Late on Friday night, doctors transplanted the liver of Leena Binoy, a brain-dead woman from Mangaluru into Somashekar, 37, who was suffering from chronic liver disorder. The surgery was done at the government-run liver clinic at PMSSY hospital inside Victoria complex. The doctors themselves had pooled in money for the operation.

According to Dr N S Nagesh, who conducted the surgery, the recipient suffered from primary graft non-functioning when the newly grafted liver didn’t function in his body.

Were not doctors aware that even if they transplanted the liver what would be the survival chances of the patient ? since his by birth liver was fully damaged and was not responding to any medical assistance. Very sad that the sacrifice done by Leena’s family to another human being has left this world. Can the liver be again harvested and used for someone else ?
