Police on Duty Assaulted at Melkar, Accused Injured as Locals Intervene

Mangaluru: When the Bantwal town police on July 9, received information that there was a commotion going on between a lorry driver and the public at Melkar, ASI Shailesh along with three other police reached the spot.

When the police reached the spot, Abdul Salam (28) from Golthamajal, Bantwal was holding an iron rod in his hand and fighting with the public. When the police intervened and tried to stop the fight, Abdul Salam used foul language and assaulted the police. He also damaged the police vehicle hitting it with the iron rod.

The locals then intervened and stopped the accused from assaulting the police. Abdul Salam was also injured.

The Bantwal Town ASI Shailesh T, PC Niranjan, HC Devappa, and PC Malik were also injured. All the injured were treated at the government hospital, Bantwal. The accused was later shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered in the Bantwal Town Police Station under section 353, 504, 506, 332, 307, 427 IPC, and 2 A Karnataka Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act.
