Udupi: The seven accused who were involved in the murder of BJP activist Praveen Poojary were produced before the court on August 19.

The Brahmavar police arrested 18 Hindu Jagarana Vedike members in connection with the brutal murder of Praveen Poojary, a BJP member here at Kenjur in Brahmavar.

On August 19, police produced Pradeep, Pradeepa, Umesh, Sueep, Shikanth Kulal, Rajesh and Aravind Koteshwar, before the Chief Judicial Magistrate. After the hearing, the accused were remanded Judicial Custody till August 31.

The remaining 11 accused Raghavendra Kachor, Prakash Naika Mandadi, Sukumar Hebri, Sukesh Kokkarne, Prakash Achar Benagal, Shantharam Cherkadi, Manjunath Cherkadi, Ganesh Mogaveera Kokkarne, Pradeep Achar Benagal, Dinesh Mogaveera, Sandeep Shetty Shivapurawere produced before the magistrate in the night after the court hours, said police sources.

On August 17 night, Ramesh had approached Praveen Poojary to rent his vehicle to transport calves, for which Praveen readily agreed. A group of 25 Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists, aged between 20 and 25, attacked Akshay and Praveen. Later they dumped Praveen near his house and informed the police. The Barhamvar Police, who arrived at the spot, shifted Praveen to the hospital where he breathed his last.

The culprits also attacked Akshay Devadiga who had accompanied Praveen, but his condition is said to be stable. The Brahmavar Police later in a swift operation arrested 18 persons involved in the crime.
