- Quarantine-Baking Their Way! Duo Dental Post Graduates Students, Dr Sanchit Mahajan and Dr Sakshi Sachdeva from the Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangaluru have turned into Weekend BAKERS creating Yummy Cheesecakes
Mangaluru: From balancing their studies to whipping up a creamy batter, students are using lockdown to experiment with launching a business, to earn some extra pocket money even as they improve their skills. The months-long lockdown has turned most of the students cum amateur cooks to nearly-perfect chefs. After all, they all got enough time to practice and graduate into masters at cooking and baking. All those of you who have been baking all this while, must have tried all the recipes of vanilla cake, chocolate cake, chocolate brownie, and other such basic recipes. Now, it was time to step up their game with other exotic bakeries like cheesecake. Meet Dr Sanchit Mahajan and Dr Sakshi Sachdeva, the two postgraduate students from the Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangaluru who have turned into weekend bakers, creating some delicious and yummy CHEESECAKES!
No doubt, the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have made all of us sit at home, restricted to home-cooked food, and a small commute from our bedrooms to our living rooms for work. As everyone tried their own ways to survive the lockdown, some had turned chefs and can be seen trying out different dishes and recipes. However, one thing that makes a lot of us curious is – Where are people procuring all these ingredients from? And it is a valid question. As we struggle to find basic necessities because they are mostly out of stock at the nearest grocery store or supermarket, people have been still making cakes, momos, and what not, all of which requires an array of ingredients. If you always look at those recipes, chances are that you’ll be saddened by the
But surely not in the case of these Dental PG students Dr Sanchit and Dr Sakshi, that when most students returned home during the lockdown, the two of them hailing from Delhi were stuck in Mangaluru, and being foodies by heart, they specialised in baking classic New York-style cheesecakes. Dr Sanchit Mahajan, a postgraduate oral and maxillofacial surgery student speaking to Team Mangalorean said, ” Two years back, me and my colleague Dr Sakshi started an Instagram page called DrGlutton- a combination of our profession and their love for travelling and to experiment with food. We used to upload pictures of whatever we ate that could be an exotic dish or a simple home-cooked dish. The home-cooked food was followed by a recipe. The lockdown was
Dr Sanchit joined by Dr Sakshi Sachdeva, an orthodontist, the duo started experimenting on cheesecakes and finally got down to something that they really liked.
Dr Sakshi said “The idea of baking cheesecakes struck when having a cheesecake at a restaurant. I felt we could try it out at home. Baking is therapeutic and it’s fun to bake with music on and just looking at the glistening cheesecake makes us happy. Our dream is to own a fine dine cheesecake bar. Cheesecakes are baked with love and this should be reflected not just on the cakes, but on the boxes too, “.The cake box comes with a handwritten logo by Dr Sakshi who has always been into calligraphy. Adding Dr Sanchit said “We had eaten a lot of cheesecakes in Mangaluru. We thought that this is something that people will like and we decided to sell it to our friends first,” .
“We bake cheesecakes at home on weekends and sell them. We take orders via whatsapp or via instagram We have an instagram page by the name of Dr.Glutton where we review dishes from various restaurants and also post recipes of the dishes that we cook. We put updates about the weekend orders on every Thursday and the cheesecakes are available for order pickup by Sundays Right now we have two flavours – Classic New York Baked Cheesecake; and Caramel Cheesecake. Our Instagram name is dr.glutton and Whatsapp No is 8217595206” said Dr Sakshi.
Just like Dr Sanchit and Dr Sakshi, if you look around or browse through the Internet/FB etc you will find many students around the country apart from their academics, are turning their baking skills into a source of income. Such largely-teenage fraternity is an enterprising one, but functions at a scale that is far from commercial or standardized. They are not afraid to admit that they are still testing the waters. And with students and people who were stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic, had unleashed their creative side. While some had started cooking simple meals at home, many had taken up baking! It’s not only Dr Sanchit and Dr Sakshi, even Bollywood celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Athiya Shetty and Katrina Kaif have been posting photos of their baking experiments, thus encouraging more people to take up baking!
And remember that Cheesecake will always taste like love! So next year on Valentine’s Day or on any Romantic Occasion or other Happy Occasion, don’t ‘Say it Flowers’, Instead “Say It With Cheesecake”! Concluding this column on the lighter side of vein, Just like Dr Sanchit Mahajan and Dr Sakshi Sachdeva who are not only TEETH-PLUCKER’S, they are also CHEESECAKE- MAKERS’, so, you too can also follow in their footsteps and be a good baker ! Some people think destiny is something you cannot escape, such as death or a curdled cheesecake, both of which always turn up sooner or later. The only way cheese is dessert is when it’s followed by the word cake.
