Registration for The Hindu Debating Competition closes on March 21

Mangaluru: Energetic orators in colleges of coastal and Malnad Karnataka hurry up; registration for The Hindu’s debating competition in English closes on Wednesday.

The debating competition is being organised in association with Rostrum, the Speakers’ Club of Alva’s Education Foundation, at Vidyagiri, Moodabidri, on March 24from 9 am.

Students from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan and Shivamogga districts pursuing graduate and postgraduate or equivalent courses are eligible to participate.

Topics

Three each topics are offered for the prelims and the finals from which a team can choose one. The topics are, “Has demonetisation helped improving the economy?”; “Is WhatsApp a boon or bane for younger generation?”; “Does river diversion really help areas in need of water?” (for prelims); “Whether student politics in colleges improves students personality?”; “Is mass media into squeezing news rather than bringing out news?” and “Has the new U.S. President created concerns among the world community?” for finals.

Free entry

Each department or stream in a college can send maximum two teams with each team getting five minutes to speak for and against the topic. Entry is free and has to come through respective institutions. Entries may be sent by mail tomlrcir@thehindu.co.in or made online–www.aiet.org.in/debate-thehindu.html. Students have to bring letter of authorisation during the contest.

Winners would get attractive cash prizes even as the organisers have made transport arrangement from Udupi and Mangaluru to Moodabidri. Transport would leave at 7.30 am from Jyothi Circle and KSRTC Bejai Bus Stand from Mangaluru and at 7 am from Udupi City Bus Stand. Food for all and accommodation for outstation students is arranged.
