Runway Becomes Path of Faith at Thiruvananthapuram Airport

Thiruvananthapuram: A confluence of tradition and modernity occurred at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport as the annual Painkuni Arattu procession of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple traversed the active runway, temporarily suspending air traffic and drawing thousands of devotees. The event showcased a unique instance where the demands of contemporary aviation yielded to centuries-old religious practice.

The Painkuni Arattu, named after the Malayalam calendar month “Painkuni” and signifying the ceremonial sea bath (“Arattu”), is a cornerstone of Kerala’s cultural and spiritual heritage. This annual festival, deeply intertwined with the history of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom, culminates in the symbolic purification of the temple’s deities through immersion in the Arabian Sea.

On the concluding day of the ten-day festival, the idols of Lord Padmanabhaswamy, Narasimha Moorthy, and Krishna Swamy were carried in a grand procession from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple to Shanghumugham Beach, situated approximately six kilometers away. The procession’s route, a historical legacy dating back to the airport’s establishment in 1932 by the Travancore royal family, necessitates crossing the airport runway.

The procession, characterized by caparisoned elephants, the rhythmic cadence of traditional percussion instruments, and the presence of members of the former royal lineage, paused momentarily at the runway before proceeding towards the sea for the Arattu ritual. Following the ritual’s conclusion, the deities were returned to the temple in a torch-lit procession after nightfall, marking the official end of the festival.

Normal flight operations resumed only after a thorough inspection and cleaning of the runway, ensuring its complete safety and readiness for aircraft. This temporary suspension of air traffic is a longstanding custom, reflecting the region’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage amidst modern development.

Since 2021, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has been operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), India’s largest private airport operator. AAHL collaborated closely with temple authorities and local administration to ensure the smooth and safe passage of the procession while adhering to stringent aviation safety protocols.

The seamless execution of this event highlights the distinctive cultural harmony prevalent in Kerala, where tradition and modern systems coexist. The Adani Group, through its airports business, demonstrated a commitment to preserving India’s living traditions. This sentiment was mirrored in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, where Chairman Gautam Adani and his family offered prayers at the Shri Ram Temple on the same day. The event at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport serves as a potent reminder that progress and preservation can coexist, fostering a future that honors the past.
