Shortage Effect: 7-day Ban on Drawing Water from River Netravati

Mangaluru: In view of depletion of water level in Thumbay vented dam in Bantwal taluk, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim has issued a notification clamping a ban of drawing of water from the dam areas by industries or individuals.

A severe shortage of drinking water has been felt in the city, which depends on Netravati for its needs. In order to meet this crisis, the AMR Power Pvt Ltd, MSEZ Ltd and other industrial units and the members of the public have been barred from drawing or pumping out water from the river.

Between the AMR dam and the Thumbay, only the Bantwal CMC and gram panchayats are allowed to draw water to supply it for drinking purposes.

The order will be reviewed after seven days depending on the prevailing situation. The commissioner of the Mangaluru City Corporation has been instructed to strictly implement the order and, if need be, police help may be obtained to ensure it.
