Sindhu beaten in final, settles for silver at Rio Olympics

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 19 (PTI) P V Sindhu’s gallant attempt to win a coveted gold medal for India ended in heart-break in when she went down fighting against Spain’s Carolina Marin and settled for a silver in the women’s singles badminton competition of the Rio Olympics here today.

The 21-year-old Indian crumbled under the relentless pressure created by Marin to lose 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in a pulsating final that lasted for an hour and 23 minutes at the Riocentre here.

Sindhu thus became the fourth Indian to win a silver at the Olympics after shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004, Athens) and Vijay Kumar (2012, London) and wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012, London).

The two-time World championship bronze medallist also became the fifth woman player from India to win a medal in Olympics and the first to clinch a silver.

Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari (2000, Sydney), boxer MC Mary Kom (2012, London), shuttler Saina Nehwal (2012, London) and wrestler Sakshi Malik (Rio, 2016) are the other women players from India to have won a medal in Olympics.

  1. I congratulate P.V. Sindhu for winning a silver in badminton. Sadly, Saina Nehwal lost as she was not fit and has been hospitalized. I wish her a speedy recovery. So, Sakshi Malik won a bronze and P.V. Sindhu a silver.

Once again, I congratulate both of them.

Sania Mirza, the sports person who makes a lot of fuss, has returned empty.

  2. Well done Sindhu, you played well and you deserved gold. All the best in your future, I know you will make India proud.

    • Our Indian lasses have truly shown that they have it in them to shine at the Olympics. I guess our preening men could take some ‘lessons’ from these lasses. Good Job, Sindhu and Sakshi. Also, the efforts of Dipa and Vinesh need to be commended.

  3. So, we have real heroes from India – Sindhu, Sakshi and Dipa Karmakar!! Even though, Dipa didn’t win any medal – she came fourth in gymanastics (women’s vault). However, it is really a HUGE HUGE HUGE achievement given her background and laughable, non-existing infrastructure in India. These three women have contributed more to India’s image at international level and inspired more Indians than all those despicable politicians and celebrities combined. The one married to pakistaani cricket player has returned empty!!

Let’s take a moment to truly thank these very talented, determined women who had no rich godfathers, no media coverage, no big money or endorsements – Still, they have made us all very proud by working really hard and determination. By the way, please do not let those miserable, talentless, narcissistic Bollywood celebrities come anywhere near these real heroes. Just watch out – they all will try to exploit this situation to promote their silly movies.

  4. While we celebrate the great achievement by these three young women (Sindhu, Sakshi and Dipa), let’s not forget the faces of those who represent the embarrassing failure of India at international sports.

    # Sports Minister Vijay Goel – This genius got reprimanded by the Olympic organisers for the “aggressive and rude” behaviour!!! The organizers even threatened to cancel his accreditation!! Can you believe this? What does he think of himself? This guy is an embarrassment.

    # State ministers from Haryana – These geniuses were in Rio using tax money to learn how to prepare if they were handed the responsibility to host similar sports event!!! Seriously? Who will trust these guys and host Olympic level event in India???? Do these guys have any shame??

    # Indian media and public – We have been promoting Cricket and Bollywood EVERYDAY!! Even with this amount of money and promotion, we have failed to produce world class talent from Bollywood!! How sad!!

    • Shameless chaps those ministers! On another note, US swimmers Ryan Lochte and Gunnar Bentz brought disrepute to the US contingent by partying, creating a fracas at a gas station and later lying (saying they were held at gunpoint) about it to cover their tracks.

    • PyareLallu RampaNNA, why did you refrain from posting ‘Jathaka, Kundali, Vaastu, Chassis no., Gas connection no, PP No, door no, Aadhar card no’ etc of those ministers?

  5. Original R. Pai,

What you said about netas and tinsel stars is quite true and will be well appreciated by knowledgeable folks, who either see through or read things. For others, it will be a time pass or an opportunity to kill time.

Netas will be running after these medal winners and those who lost by a whisker and take photos or selfies with them, as if they are know them from Adam’s times. The less said about these despicable creatures, the better. These netas have fooled the people since independence and keep on milking the nation, as most citizens in the second most populated coountry on the earth do not unite to unmask these sleazy scoundrels. Netas hog credit and grab limelight by giving them cash at taxpayers’ costs and not from their pockets.

  6. Nelson,

You may find this information entertaining.

A total of 7 athletes represented Pakistan at the Olympics, the country’s smallest ever contingent at the Games. All 7 athletes gained entry to the Olympics through either wildcard invitations or quota spots!! In other words, no athlete from Pakistan was qualified. This was the first time when Pakistan hockey team has failed to qualify for the Olympics. It’s such a shame that there were no categories for terrorism or suicide bombing. Pakistanis would have easily won these categories!! LOL

    • It’s such a shame that there were no categories for terrorism or suicide bombing. Pakistanis would have easily won these categories!! Lol.

Quite true I’d have to agree wholeheartedly with you on this one.

On another note, to INCREASE India’s Gold, Silver & Bronze hauls, our Sports Minister could request Thomas Bach (Prez. of the IOC) to introduce some events such as ‘Dalit Bashing’ – in various weight categories that too. We could start from say 25kgs and wind up with 50 Kgs coz those poor impoverished chaps don’t weigh much in the first place.

India could field their ‘bestestest’ BD/VHP goons and rest assured (no wildcats here.. oops.. I mean Wildcard entries), they would bring back ALL the golds, silvers and bronzes in ALL the categories! As it is, they have an UNMATCHED record for such stuff and hey, they ain’t doing it for gold or any accolades. They are doing it in the name of the holy Ambaa! Jeez! Man! What drivel and we have Yumreeki RampaNNA’s who lap it up wholesale!

  7. Dear Original R. Pai,

Thank you for the information and I am aware of it since the day Rio Olympics was officially opened.

Yes, you are right that only seven sportsmen (most of them did not qualify and are will card entries) and they did not send their hockey team. How sad and what a pity? However, the funny and interesting thing is that 17 administrative officials and staff accompanianied them. I wonder if their Prime Minister and their Army Chief accompanied them in disguise like wearing a Sindhi cap or pagdi or skull cap, sporting a wig appearing like an unkempt beard and a tooth-brush or no moustache.

Yes, if there was a category in Rio Olympics for the “exertise” or shall we say”crime” that you have mentioned, Pakistan would have qualified lock-stock-and-barrel, much ahead of Somalia (whose expertise is in “sea piracy”) and Colombia.

  8. Why is Joker Praveena Pinto always very sensitive to any negative comment on a particular community? I talk about kasaragodu geniuses at MIA and he gets very offended. I talk about Pakistan and he brings up RSS/VHP. This makes me wonder if Praveena is really a Praveena OR…Pervez ???One can not underestimate his long, transformational stay in Saudi Arabia and the influence of his 7-8 roommates at any given time ranging from Egypt to Bangladesh!!

    • “…if Praveena is really a Praveena or Pervez” (and 3 spaces) and then THREE question marks. i.e.,” ???”… blah blah..”and the influence of his 7-8 roommates ranging from Egypt to Bangladesh” – Joker Rampa

      PyareLallu Rampuji,

I could be Praveena, Pervez, Paul the IInd or the Archbishop of Canterbury for all it matters out here or anywhere. Anyway, now that I have dispensed with the formalities, let us continue.

Rampa, HAVE you forgotten all about your stay with us (Bengalis, Egyptians, Mallus, Andhrites, Thambis, Nepalis, Syrians etc.) in a small 10 x 10 room in Saudi?

Remember, since you were the most ‘HIGHLY educated’ (4th pass, 5th fail… baar baar.. har baar) chap amongst us (we were all ‘aanganawaadi’ school dropouts after 2nd std itself), we gave you the top-most bunk as a mark of respect?

And remember the time when you were so famished that you could have swallowed a sheep – whole – horns and hooves included? And that is when Habeeb Ul Haq (from Bangladesh) shared his Haleem & Kalmi Kebabs with you? And by Jove, remember how you took to Haleem & Kalmi Kebabs like a duck takes to water & STILL do?

Remember how your Saudi stay literally transformed you into a fine upright (actually uptight) citizen of this big bad world? Aren’t you thankful I jiggled those fast-depleting 2 tbsps. of grey cells left?

Oh man…. how could you forget those days? Sigh!

  9. Seven athletes, i.e. wild card entries, who have never qualified, nor have rankings, have been sent.

For all you know, these sportsmen may not be Pakistani citizens, but nationals of other countries who have got the opportunity to represent and play for Pakistan. Pakistan has not sent their hockey team, which is their traditional sports. Eh, sounds weird. The situation is very bad in Pakistan.

Well, Original R. Pai, you have narrated half the story and I will tell you the other half. 17 administrative and support staff are accompanying them

  10. The very fact that some members of the administrative and support staff were not present with small water bottles and high energy stuff like chocolates, including a doctor (as this lady was running a marathon), etc., when she collapsed due to dehydration raises eyebrows. In the panel discussions yesterday, Arnab Goswami was lambasting the Sports Ministry official and others and there was the sportsperson herself exposing things. Mr. Praveen Pinto do you think he did the right thing or he should have smiled and offered them bouquets and said, “Ap log to lok sewak hai, aur ap mewa khaey ya chalang marey ya khel kood karey koi farak nahin padta.”

Sports Ministers and his delegation were busy with taking selfies, having beach parties and visiting every place in the Rio Olympics complex, as if they were in India where netas and their chamchas can do anything and the public are just serfs and the Sports Minister was roaming around as it was his personal fiefdom or constituency.

    • Mr. Praveen ‘Pinto’, do you think…. – Mr. Nelson on Jaisha

To be frank, I’m watching Arnab as I’m pounding on my laptop to convey my response to you. I couldn’t watch his program of last night @ 9PM. However, today, I hit the ‘mute’ button to get him off mute mode. And oh yeah, I love the way he is lambasting those incompetent and worthless sports ‘officials’. Good show, Arnab.

  11. Mr. Praveen Pinto,

So, on this issue, we are on the same plank.

Well, these sports officials, who may have been busy with the Samba dancers should be penalised.

    Regards,

  12. I know that some illiterates on this forum have been making fun of Sri Modiji’s ‘Mann ki baath’. Haters will always be haters. Fortunately, Modiji seems to be a man of actions and doing his best to bring about changes. Haters have been attacking him even before he came to power. They want him to do the miracle of fixing all the issues created by the party they voted for – Congress!!

Here are two incidents highlight how he is a man of actions unlike his predecessors who lacked confidence and political courage to do the right things.

    • Yumreeki Thyampanna,

If your internet connection is fast enough (i.e., assuming that you have paid off your net bills and THAT is further assuming that your overseer Buffalo Bill(a) has paid you your daily wages), could you kindly google-up what BJP MP & Dalit leader Udit Raj had to say about Beef & Bolt?

Say, could this lack of Vitamin B 12 explain why Indian athletes who represented a mammoth population of some 1.25 billion people could manage to win only 2 medals?

      Over you, your Lardship. 😉

    • “mann Ki Baath…” – RampaNNA

Kallivalli Monkey Baath, man. For me, RampaNNA ki Baath is more interesting as I’m learning ‘more and more’ about me such as:

[1] My Yumreeki ‘Bheeza’ was rejected.

[2] I don’t know jack**** about his beloved Murudu statues while he knows all about Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio.

[3] I was working in Saudi and put up in a 10 x 10 foot room with some 10 others (while conveniently forgetting that Rampa himself was occupying the top-most bunk-bed out there.

      [4] I own/run a Beedi business in M’lore.

[5] With the help of NASA, the FBI, a Walmart Crystal Ball and Google, Rampa has ‘discovered’ that I recently have found a ‘new job’ at Pilikula (which incidentally allows me the privilege of reinstating my net connection and exchanging pleasantries with Lard Rampa on a daily basis.

Thank God for RampaNNA Ki Baath.
