Sniff..Sniff..Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Sniffer Dog Shwana Hailed as a Hero was ‘Mangalore International Airport (MIA) Passengers Best Friend’ Averting Massive Aviation Crisis, on 20 January 2020 when a unattended bag carrying live bomb was found near the airport entrance ticket counter

Mangaluru : Yes, a Dog is considered as “Man’s Best Friend”- and on Monday, 20 January 2020, a sniffer dog belonging to the Central Industrial Security Force stationed at the Mangalore International Airport, which was hailed as a Hero, was considered to be the “Passengers Best Friend” , averting a Massive Aviation crisis, when a unattended bag carrying a live bomb was found near the airport entrance ticket counter. Meet the Sniffer Dog SHWANA, who played an important role in detecting the bomb inside the laptop bag.

Even though the security forces out of suspicion can stop a passenger at the airport for contraband goods, drugs, ammunition, explosives etc, but the actual detection of such items are done by the sniffer dogs when they are put into action- like in case of the bomb in the bag found at Mangalore International Airport.. As per police sources a suspicious bag found containing an explosive substance with some basic features of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found near the ticket counter of Mangaluru International Airport on Monday morning that caused much panic in the area, was safely detonated by the bomb detection and disposal squad. The Bomb detection squad personnel took the bag into its custody earlier in the day, detonating it safely at a ground in Kenjar, one Km from the Airport.

Police sources said the bag contained a metal coin box in which explosive substance and metal pieces were placed. The timer connected to the explosive substance was reportedly not working. Police said a person is suspected to have come in an auto-rickshaw around 9:20 a.m. and planted the bag, around 10ms away from the Air India ticket counter. Police are analyzing the CCTV footage of the airport and are said to have zeroed in on certain suspects and an auto-rickshaw. Thanks to the quick alertness of the CISF and especially the Hero of the Day, Sniffer Dog Shwana, which averted a disaster and loss of lives.

Today, no doubt that dogs continue to serve vital roles in maintaining airport security from that first screening before boarding to that final check while crossing through customs and border patrol. It is thanks to months of training, during which the dogs’ natural desire to hunt and their incredible olfactory sense are honed, that the pups learn to search for illegal and dangerous items as they search for their favorite toys. Highly trained dogs were reported to be employed in airport security roles within the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), predominantly focusing on anti-terrorism measures such as apprehending passengers carrying explosives.

But sniffing out bombs is only one of the many incredible tasks detection dogs are able to perform at airports. Whether they’re stopping poachers in their tracks or keeping malaria at bay, here are nine ways airport dogs help and amaze us every day :

1) They stop the trafficking of live, wild animals; 2.They keep ivory, rhino horn, and other animal parts from traveling abroad 3. They find stacks of cash 4. They help eradicate malaria. 5. They help prevent the invasion of plant and animal species. 6. They keep explosives off planes. 7. They find drugs. 8. They find contraband electronics. 9. They provide comfort to stressed out passengers.

Despite the fact that airport sniffer dogs have been trained to narc on passengers, their very presence provides a sense of comfort to them. It’s hard not to smile at a happy labrador working hard to earn a treat or giggle at the tickle of a wet beagle nose sniffing out invasive plants. It’s also calming for passengers to witness the visible presence of anti-terrorism tactics in action, making them more assured of the airport’s security. Perhaps the detector dog’s greatest skill is resisting cuddling and kissing every person who walks through the airport yet still improving their mood. You’re not allowed to pet them, but as recognition for dogs’ innate talents spreads, you may just find yourself at an airport that employs therapy dogs that you are very, very encouraged to pet.
