Solemn Observance of Good Friday Across Mangalore Diocese: Bishop Calls the Cross a Beacon of Hope

Mangaluru: On April 3, 2026, the Diocese of Mangalore united in solemn Good Friday observances, gathering thousands in prayer and reflection on the hope and sacrifice represented by Jesus Christ’s Passion and Death.

The main liturgical service of the day was presided over by the Bishop of Mangalore, Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, at St Rita Church, Panja in the Puttur Deanery. The service, which traditionally begins at the hour of Christ’s death, included the Prostration, the Reading of the Passion according to the Gospel of St John, the General Intercessions, the Adoration of the Holy Cross, and the Rite of Holy Communion.

In his moving reflection on the theme “The Cross: A Sign of God’s Love and Hope,” Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha emphasized that the sacrifice of Jesus reveals the depth of divine mercy. “The Cross is not a sign of defeat, but a beacon of new hope,” the Bishop stated. “When we face trials, we must remember that the Lord is right beside us. Even in the moments of Christ’s death, we see the Father’s love and the Son’s total surrender.”

Year of Children Highlights Morning Devotions
Earlier in the day, the ‘Way of the Cross’ was conducted in all 125 parishes of the diocese. In line with the ongoing ‘Year of Children’ observed in the diocese, several parishes organized special ‘Children’s Way of the Cross’ events, where the younger generation led the meditations and prayers. At the Rosario Cathedral, the traditional panegyric of the Crucifixion was delivered from the historic antique pulpit, followed by the symbolic ‘unnailing’ and procession of the Body of Christ.

Across the city and rural parishes—including Milagres, Derebail, and Neermarga—large crowds participated in outdoor processions, reflecting on the fourteen stations of the Cross. The day was marked by strict fasting and silence, as the community entered the final period of preparation for the Easter Vigil.

Parish priests and religious leaders coordinated the liturgical ceremonies, ensuring a dignified atmosphere of penance and introspection as the diocese awaits the celebration of the Resurrection.
