SP Annamalai forms Committee to look into Safety of School Children

Udupi: In a swift action Udupi district Police superintendent K Annamalai formed a 12 member committee to improve the safety of vehicles carrying children to schools in the district.

Pramod Madhwaraj district minister in-charge organised a meeting of officials of the departments of Education and Transport, drivers of Auto rickshaws, maxi cabs and vans carrying school children, heads of schools and NGO’s on July 6 at the DC Complex Manipal. The meeting was held in the backdrop of the death of eight school children in the Trasi road accident.

After wide discussions on the safety of vehicles carrying children to schools, Pramod Madhwaraj suggested forming a committee of 12 members under the presidentship of district Police superintendent.
As per the suggestion by the minister Annamalai formed a 12 member committee comprising representatives of the school management, staff, parents, the auto rickshaw and taxi union and the NGOs.

The members of the committee are: Annamalai (SP Udupi), S B Surendrappa (RTO Udupi), Mathew C Nainan (Principal Little Rock School Brhamavar), Mohini Bai (Headmistress, Govt Model Hr. Pri. School, Vandse Kollur), Ramesh K Kotian (General Secretary Udupi district Taxi men Association), Haridas Bhat (Vice president Udupi district Taxi and Maxi cab Association), Premanad Kalmadi (Program Director Native Organisation Udupi), Dinesh Hegde Ulepadi (Advocate and Child right Activist), Raghavendra (Auto Drivers Representative), Suresh Ameen ( Working president Udupi district Auto Rickshaw drivers and owners Association), Krishnanda Chatra (Owner and member Canara Bus Union), Gracy Gonsalves (Deputy Director Women and Child department Udupi).

The Committee will submit a report to the district minister in-charge within a week on the steps to be taken to improve the safety of vehicles carrying children to schools.
