SP Dr Sanjeev Patil’s Phone-in effect, 1250 cases registered in a week

Udupi: “The police department will initiate action against the bus operators if students are allowed to travel on the footboard of buses”, said District Superintendent of Police Dr Sanjeev M Patil. He was interacting with the media persons during the phone-in programme held at the SP Office, Udupi here on September 26.

A caller said that students of Bramhavar and Kokkarne region were found travelling dangerously on the footboard of buses when there were enough seats in the bus. While in some buses the seats were full and students were found travelling on the footboard. The caller said that students risk their lives by travelling dangerously on the footboard. Replying to the caller, SP said that he will propose the installations of doors in all the buses to avoid students from travelling on the footboard. He also said that the issue will be brought to the notice of the bus operators during the RTA meeting scheduled on September 1.

Another caller said that auto rickshaws in Karkala are parked in an inappropriate manner causing hurdles to the pedestrians and other vehicles. SP replying to the caller said that he will take necessary action immediately and direct the Karkala police to initiate action.

A caller said that the daily wage labourers were not paid wages on time, and the benefits extended to them were not paid in due time. The caller also said that money was being lent to people at high-interest rates. SP in his reply advised the caller and said to file a complaint in the police station and to initiate action.

Later interacting with the media, SP said that only 6 calls were received as it was peak festival time. The police department will initiate effective action on the complaints received from the callers. The police officials have effectively addressed the complaints recorded during the last phone-in programme. 31 Matka cases, 5 gambling cases, 265 shrill horn cases, drunk and drive 25 cases and 865 cases for riding without a helmet were recorded after the phone-in programme. The phone-in programme will be held effectively, he added.

The department will initiate action against cannabis consumers and peddlers. He further said that he has spoken with the Manipal University officials on the consumption of narcotic drugs. He also said that effective action will be taken on illegal activities which include illegal sand mining, cattle theft, drug peddling etc. He also said that if the people have any information on the illegal activities reported in the district they can feel free to contact the district superintendent of the district, and their names will not be disclosed. The District administration has given permission for sand mining in the CRZ Blocks, and the police will keep a vigil on the district borders on the movement of vehicles which transport illegal sand.

The ZP has come forward with a proposal of sponsoring CCTV cameras and the effective utilisation of the cameras will be made in maintaining law and order.
