SR JOSEPH PERIERA, THE MAN OF STEEL! The first person to win all 4 legs of Trek India Challenge Twice!!
The governments, the world over have set the age for retirement in any services, be it government or private companies. This is majorly when a person reaches the age of 60 years! By then, the person must have done a lot of investments, had a wonderful life with bliss and must have acquired riches as desired and applicable. So, the retirement life starts when the body clock hits 60.
Here is an exception to the rule!! For some, there is no retirement at all! Joseph Pereira is all of 61 and still going strong. A cyclist from our own Mangalore and a busy bee who runs a news portal …Mangalorean.com along with his wife, Violet Pereira and leads a hectic but peaceful life with his family.
This is Super Randonneur Joseph ki mini Kahani in his own words:
“In 2010, when I took voluntary retirement from my job in Dubai and settled down, I was very much interested in buying a bicycle.”
“Later I joined the Mangalore Bicycle Club and regularly participated in the club’s activities. Once, I went on a solo ride to Udupi, after which my confidence to pedal long distances increased. Next, without informing my wife, I pedalled all the way to Sakeleshpur, a ride of about 260 Kms, and after that, there was no looking back. Being addicted to cycling, I would go on long rides whenever I would feel like going. In the year 2019, I joined WER Cycling and participated in several Brevets”.
“During the 500 km ride of Trek challenge 2020, there was a red alert announced due to heavy rains. I decided to try my luck despite the rains and my wife assisted me in planning my ride. When I started my ride at 12:25 am there was heavy rain. The rain continued almost throughout my ride for two days and with great difficulty, I completed the ride in 34:09 hours”.
How he became a silent assassin who conquered the cycling challenge amidst youngsters over half his age?
In 2020, Joseph won the Trek India Challenge in all four legs – 100, 200, 300 and 500 kilometres out of more than 3400 participants. In 2021, he again won in all four categories – 250, 500, 750 & 1000 km out of more than 4500 participants. That’s a great achievement! There are also other two winners this year, namely, Vinayaka Bhatt (MACC) & Harish Kumar from (Bharatpur Flyers Club) Bharatpur, Rajasthan!
But, behind the ever-smiling face lies a steely determination and a high level of dedication. Apart from the strength which is that of a school boy’s in pedalling and racing adds perfectly to his other qualities.
