If State Government takes over Udupi Sri Krishna Temple I will quit – Pejawar Swamiji

Udupi: If the state government takes over the Udupi Sri Krishna Math I will quit the Math. I don’t want to work as a government servant said Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji.

He was speaking to the media persons on Wednesday, February 7, over the state government’s proposal to include Sri Krishna Math under the Muzrai Department, The Swamiji said that we did not know about the announcement of the Government. If the media reports are false we are not opposing it, but if the reports are true then the people themselves will decide of protesting against the government proposal. I am not going for any protest it is left to the public. By making this type of proposal the government has given a weapon for the opposing parties to protest, he added.

The Government’s move is to show clearly that the state government is acting as Anti–Hindu. The elected government should treat everyone equally but this congress government is playing politics in the religious matters. Recently the Congress-led state government has decided to revoke all cases against the minorities, if this is a secular government then it should revoke cases against all the innocent people, he said.

District incharge minister Pramod Madhwaraj said the Supreme Court had directed to collect opinions and suggestions to redraft the Endowment Act. The government is following the order, he said.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar said the move had caused concern among heads of religious institutions.

“The government should immediately withdraw the public notification. Else, the BJP will take to streets in protest. If the government has good intentions, it should bring all religious institutions (Hindu, Muslim and Christian) under the department’s control,” he said.

The department of Religious and Charitable Endowments (Muzrai) had, on January 29, issued a public notification inviting opinions and suggestions from the public, priests, temple administrations and religious heads.

Noting that there was a need for a comprehensive law, it had sought to know their thoughts on bringing the mutts, temples and certain religious institutions under the ambit of the Muzrai department and the degree of control the department should exercise.
