Umashree who also holds the portfolio of Minister for Kannada and Culture, was in Mangaluru to attend the Beary Sahitya Academy award ceremony. Prior to the award ceremony, she will review the implementation of various schemes in the district .

Umashree is also the Bidar District In-charge Minister. Upon being asked about the situation of the water crisis in Bidar, she said, “We have held several meetings to address the water crisis in the district. Several steps have been taken like, water is being supplied through tankers to the severely affected areas, flushing of old government owned borewells is being done, special Task Force has been appointed at the Taluk Panchayat level to take independent decisions on water-related issues etc.”

She further said, “Borewells can be dug in the Zilla Panchayat areas but the area that comes under the corporation has to invite tenders to drill borewells and hence the delay. Rs 5-6 lakh of CSR funds will be used for drilling borewells and private water tankers are also hired to supply water to the dry regions.”

Speaking about honour killings and love jihad, Umashree said, “Honour killings are wrong and we condemn it. If any such cases are reported then strict action will be taken against the accused. Love jihad is just a name, but the motive behind it is similar to honour killings. The society should be sensitized on these issues, parents and guardians should change their mindset.”

MLA Shakuntala Shetty, MUDA Chairman, Ibrahim Kodijal and others were also present.
