Sullia: Selfie Craze Claims Another Life at Kalyala Falls near Sampaje

Sullia: More and more lives are being lost at hazardous tourist spots where craze appears to be takes the better of commonsense.

Hardly within a month after a man slipped and drowned while taking a selfie at the Kalyala falls near Sampaje, there was a repeat incident on Tuesday, Sep 15.

Harshit Naik aka Annu (20), originally hailing from Karike off Bhagamandala in Kodagu, lived with his uncle Balakrishna Naik in Beeramangala in Sullia. He was into painting profession with his friends Harish Banglegudde,
Chandra Kantamangala and Raghava Ajjavara.

As they had a holiday on Tuesday, they all decided to go to Sampaje to view the Kalyala waterfalls and spend their time. The picturesque background tempted them to click a selfie. When they were doing so, Harshit fell off and fell deep into the water.

Others ran down to his rescue and took him to the Sampaje hospital. Then he was shifted in a 108 ambulance to the community hospital in Sullia and given first aid. For advanced treatment he was taken to Mangaluru. He is said to have breathed his last on the way.

Following these two tragedies, the Sampaje panchayat, in an emergency decision, has banned entry to the waterfall area. The ban may be lifted after safeguards are erected.
