Trade unions’ nationwide strike may affect Coastal Districts on Friday

Mangaluru/Udupi: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will observe a bandh on September 2 in support of nation-wide general strike call given by the Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU).

Normal life in the Coastal districts may be hit on Friday in view of the nationwide bandh call given by 10 central trade unions to protest against the labour reforms proposed by the Centre. Commercial establishments, nationalised banks, insurance companies among others will remain closed in support of the mass strike called to protest against the ‘anti-labour’ policies of the Union government.

Essential goods and services such as milk, hospitals, medical shops and ambulances will be exempted. Several autorickshaw and taxi unions, Bank Employees’ unions have also announced their support for the bandh.

Schools and colleges have so far not declared holiday officially. It is up to local authorities and institutions to decide on the matter.

The 10 central trade unions including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, UTUC and LPF have backed the nationwide bandh. The RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has pulled out of the strike.

Services of sectors including, electricity, transport, telecom and insurance will be affected. Banks, government offices and factories will most likely be closed on Friday. Public transport services will also be affected. Private Bus owners have decided to keep off the roads on Friday. The KSRTC Buses will remain off the road from 6 am to 6 pm on Friday. The buses will resume operation in the evening.

Members of AITUC are creating awareness among the public through several activities, including distribution of pamphlets and holding public meetings.
