Truck Owners in Dakshina Kannada Raise Alarm Over Exploitation, Demand Urgent Government Action

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada Truck Owners’ Association (R.) has submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate highlighting a series of challenges faced by truck operators in the region. The association warned that if grievances are not addressed promptly, truck owners may resort to strikes and demonstrations.

One of the major concerns raised is the rampant overloading of trucks, particularly those transporting laterite soil and other materials, far beyond permissible limits. The association alleges that despite repeated complaints, authorities have failed to take stringent action, resulting in road damage and higher accident risks.

Truckers also pointed out that freight rates have remained unchanged for the past ten years, even though the government has officially notified charges for different truck categories. Due to poor enforcement, middlemen continue to exploit the system, pushing many operators into financial distress.

The rising diesel prices, toll charges, spare parts costs, and compliance expenses have further worsened the situation. In addition, truckers complained about outside-state vehicles operating illegally through “two-point loading” within Karnataka, causing further losses.

“If the government does not intervene immediately to enforce fair freight rates and stop illegal operations, thousands of local truck owners will be pushed to the brink of closure,” said Sushanth Shetty, President of the Association.

The association has also demanded land for a parking yard and transparency at cement godowns.
