Tulu Sangha, Borivali Celebrates ‘Aatid Onji Koota,’ Emphasizing Tradition and Modernization
Mumbai: Tulu Sangha, Borivali, recently hosted its “Aatid Onji Koota” celebration, reaffirming its commitment to preserving Tulu culture while embracing the advancements of the modern era. The event, held on August 3rd at the Adinath Digambar Jain Temple Trust, Dharma Nagar, Borivali West, brought together members of the Tulu community for a day of cultural immersion and community bonding.
Presided over by President Harish Maindan, the event featured Dr. Bharat Kumar Polipu, President of Karnataka Sangha Mumbai and a renowned theatre director, as the chief guest. Dr. Polipu underscored the vital role of organizations like Tulu Sangha in fostering unity, particularly in a time marked by societal divisions. He emphasized the importance of preserving Tulu heritage amidst rapid modernization, stating, “While embracing modernity, it is our responsibility also to preserve our rich heritage.” He further highlighted the significance of Tulu culture in shaping individual identity and the role of arts like theatre and Yakshagana in personal development. Drawing a contrast with the past, Dr. Polipu noted the strength derived from traditional joint family systems and expressed his appreciation for Tulu Sangha’s efforts in promoting positive values.
President Harish Maindan extended a warm welcome to all attendees, while Founder President Vasu Putran and former President Prakash Shetty Petemane spoke about the founding principles and objectives of the Sangha.
A highlight of the event was the traditional Aati dishes culinary competition, where women members showcased their culinary skills. Sumathi Salian secured the first prize, followed by Malavika Moily in second place and Amita Rai in third. The judging panel consisted of Surendra Kumar Marnad, Sachit Shreyan, and Sudha Shetty.
The program commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp, led by Shobha Shetty, Chairperson of the Ladies Wing, who also led the prayer. The guests and judges were formally introduced by Krishnaraj Suvarna, Anil Shetty, Vijayalakshmi Devadiga, and Shobha Shetty.
The event showcased a variety of cultural performances by talented artists such as Nithya Suvarna, Vasudha Pai, Shobha Poojary, Veda Shetty, Vijayalakshmi Devadiga, Priya Uppoor, Harshika M. R., and artists from the Mahisha Mardini Temple. Chitrarth M. R. presented a song, Lakshmi Devadiga shared Tulu proverbs, and the Sangha’s members performed a Tulu skit titled “Tulu Nadu Aisira.” The traditional Aati Kalanja performance, featuring Vivaan Sherigar from Nallasopara portraying the Kalanja with support from Lakshmi Devadiga, added a vibrant touch to the celebrations.
General Secretary Krishnaraj Suvarna delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all involved. Attendees were treated to a delightful array of over 35 varieties of Aati dishes prepared by the Ladies Wing. The event was skillfully compered by Youth Wing President Adv. Raghava M.
Tulu Sangha Borivali’s commitment to community engagement was evident through the successful organization of “Aatid Onji Koota.” The Sangha continues to provide a platform for members of all ages to showcase their talents and contribute to the preservation of Tulu culture. The organization expressed its hope for increased youth involvement to further expand its activities.
