Udupi: 20-year-old Youth Commits Suicide in Police Station – Lock-up death Suspected

Udupi: A 20-year-old, daily wage labourer died allegedly by hanging himself at Manipal police station here on August 5 late night.The deceased has been identified as Gayaprasad (20), a native of Uttar Pradesh and was a daily wage labourer in Manipal.

According to sources it is learnt that on August 3, Gaya’s wife Roshni (18) had committed suicide, in this regard her brother Shivamangalam filed a complaint against Gaya alleging sexual harassment in the Manipal police station. Based on the complaint Daya was arrested by the Manipal police on August 4, but he was not produced before the court.

IGP Western range, Amrit Paul visited the mortuary on August 6.

Speaking to mediapersons, IGP said that the Manipal Police had detained Gayaprasad on the basis of his brother-in-law’s complaint. When he was brought to the police station, he was normal and the constable put him in lock-up. Around 11:30 pm, he asked for a blanket with the police and they provided it on humanitarian grounds. When the police constable went to him at around 11:45 pm, he was found hanging from the window grill using the blanket.

He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Manipal, where he was declared brought dead. Police officials conducted a post mortem in the presence of magistrate Sunitha at KMC Manipal. The National Human Rights Commission has also been informed about the death. “We are expecting the post- mortem report by two or three days,” he said.

On August 5, Gayaprasad was shivering from cold, he asked for a blanket which the police had provided. On the same night Gaya allegedly used the blanket and hanged himself in the cell.

The body has been sent for post mortem. The exact reason for the death is yet to be ascertained.

Additional SP Santosh Kumar, Kundapur DySP Manjunath Shetty, Manipal CPI Girish, Town PSI Girish, Malpe PSI Ravikumar and others were present.
