Udupi District Traffic Police collect over Rs 3.69 lakh in Fines within four days

Udupi: The new motor vehicle amendment act came into force on September 1 throughout the country but it was implemented in Udupi District 5 days later.

According to Udupi SP Nisha James, the Udupi District implemented the new motor vehicle amendment act from September 5 onwards and in Bengaluru alone, the traffic police have registered 752 cases from September 5 to September 8

The main traffic violations booked are against one way, not wearing the helmet and not wearing the seat belt. Those using mobile phones while driving and vehicles without insurance have also been booked.

A total amount of Rs 3,69,200/- has been collected from the violaters.

On July 31, the Parliament had passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that had provisions for stricter and heavier penalties for violations in an attempt to improve road safety. The Bill got the President’s assent on August 9 and is applicable throughout the country from September 1.

The Act provides for a penalty of Rs 10,000 for not giving way to emergency vehicles and Rs 10,000 for driving despite disqualification.

Penalty for dangerous driving has been increased to Rs 5,000 from Rs 1,000, while drunken driving under the new law attracts a fine of Rs 10,000.

Penalty for over-speeding range from Rs 1,000- 2,000. Driving without insurance is punishable with Rs 2,000 fine while driving without a helmet will attract Rs 1,000 penalty and 3-month suspension of the license.
