Udupi Man Dies by Suicide at Hospital After Alleged Assault Following Dispute Over Relationship

Udupi: A young man who was undergoing treatment at Ajjarkad District Hospital in Udupi after allegedly being assaulted during a confrontation at a woman’s residence died by suicide in the hospital restroom.

The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Poojary, an activist of the Nairkudi unit of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike.

According to reports, Pradeep had been in a relationship with a young woman for the past seven years. However, she had recently rejected his advances. In 2025, he allegedly confronted and harassed her, following which a case was registered against him at the Women’s Police Station. Police subsequently arrested him and later released him on bail.

On October 27, Pradeep allegedly visited the woman’s residence again, created a disturbance, and attempted to throw chilli powder. During the incident, members of the woman’s family reportedly assaulted him.

Following the incident, the woman’s family lodged a complaint at the Women’s Police Station, while Pradeep reportedly filed a counter-complaint at the Hiriyadka Police Station.

Pradeep sustained serious injuries in the alleged assault and was admitted to Ajjarkad District Hospital for treatment. He later died by suicide in the hospital restroom.

Following his death, activists of Hindu organisations and local residents gathered outside the Udupi Town Police Station, demanding strict action against those allegedly involved in the incident.

The Udupi Town Police Station has registered a case, and it is investigating further.
