Udupi: Media and Government officers should close the communication gap between the people to facilitate development said senior reporter Nagesh Hegde. He was speaking during a media workshop on ‘News Which Matters’ organised by the district administration at Rajathadri here on January 27.
The government is supporting industrial growth, when there is an industrial setup heading there is a common notion of for and against views. ISPRL unit storing crude oil is setup in Udupi district, the idea behind the project was not effectively conveyed to the people which resulted in opposition from the people. Media should play effective role in conveying the right message to the people. Media houses have failed in effectively promoting the economic diversity of Udupi to the globe. Udupi has effectively promoted Swachch Bharat Abhiyan since 50 years but it was not popularised by any media houses. The officials should use media as a tool to promote cleanliness drives, he added.
Satish Kumar senior assistant editor of Hindu News daily said that we should question the path followed by media houses in the recent times. Today a newspaper is publishing news stories which confuse people. Abroad news stories are elaborated while in India news stories lead to confusion. The news stories should not confuse people but rather develop them. Media has a responsibility to unite the nation and not to divide.
The print media is dependent on advertisements but at the same time it should have social prospects. Reporters should gather accurate reports instead of sitting in the office and collecting news.
Jyothi Irvattur Senior correspondent from Bengaluru said that news stories should tend towards bringing social change. A media organisation should not serve a group or religion, she added.

Media in India in today’s world should be treated in a “big picture” context. India is a large country with a large population of all ages, all religions, all languages and much more. Our Industry has multiplied, and so also our Economy and our Society. India is an advanced nation marches boldly forward with many other nations. Our Educational background and our historical background, specially our admirable democracy is something that the World is amazed. Media in India therefore should be always molded in a positive spirit. The people need to see the bright picture than a gloomy picture. The generations of India are changing fast with growing population. We are glad to witness a large congregation of students attending this Conference. India of today belongs to the “young” and “enterprising”. The Media has a great role to play. We pray to God that the Media of India will always play a positive role that will help the masses of people to grasp always something is good and positive.
