Udupi Police Arrest Two Uttar Pradesh Men in Ambalpady House Burglary Case
UDUPI: In a significant breakthrough in the Ambalpady house burglary case, Udupi City Police arrested two alleged members of the Bedia gang from Uttar Pradesh and recovered stolen cash, watches, and other property from their possession.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammed Zafar, 22, and Kadir, 32, both residents of Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh. Police said the two are believed to be part of the Bedia gang, a group with a history of involvement in burglary and other crimes across several states.
According to the police, burglars broke into the house of A.S. Ramamurthy, near Sahara Apartments on Kunjugudde Road in Ambalpady, sometime between July 1 and July 9. During the theft, cash amounting to Rs 6 lakh and three wristwatches worth around Rs 10,000 were reportedly stolen. Following the incident, a case was registered at the Udupi City Police Station, and an investigation was launched.
During the probe, police arrested Mohammed Zafar near Indrali Railway Station in Udupi on September 2. Upon interrogation, he reportedly admitted that he and his associate Kadir had committed the burglary at the Ambalpady residence together. Police said the stolen cash was divided equally between the two accused.
Based on information obtained from Zafar, police recovered Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and a mobile phone from his possession. He was taken into police custody, after which a police team travelled to Uttar Pradesh and recovered an additional Rs 1.06 lakh. The investigation then continued to trace the second accused.
Subsequently, Kadir was arrested in Moodbidri on September 25. Police recovered Rs 1.65 lakh in cash, two silver coins, five watches, and two screwdrivers allegedly used in the burglary, along with other property from him. Police estimated the total value of the recovered items at Rs 4,50,500.
The operation was carried out under the direction of Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, with guidance from Additional SP Sudhakar Naik and DySP Belliyappa. The investigation was led by Udupi City Police Station Inspector Mahesh Prasad, with the assistance of Police Sub-Inspectors Ratnakar K. and Harish, and personnel including Prasanna C., Jeevan Kumar, Ananda Ganiga, Ananda, Obalesh, Anandayya, and Mallayya Hiremath from Manipal Police Station, along with other staff from the Udupi City Police Station.
Police further stated that both accused are members of the Bedia gang and originally hail from Baniyather, Chandausi, and Akrauli in Uttar Pradesh. Their criminal records, officials said, indicate involvement in multiple cases across different states.
Mohammed Zafar is reportedly an accused in one house burglary case registered at Nainital Police Station in Uttarakhand. Kadir, meanwhile, has been booked in one illegal arms case and one house burglary case at Baniyather Police Station in Uttar Pradesh, and in another illegal arms case and one house burglary case at Civil Lines Police Station in Moradabad. Police said he has six cases registered against him in total.
The arrests and recoveries have been described as an important step in solving the burglary case and in curbing the activities of interstate criminal networks operating in the region.
