Udupi: Tax revision void says Amrutha Krishnamurthy

Udupi: The revision of tax by CMC Udupi is void under section 256 and 257 of Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act of 1964 said former CMC vice-president Amrutha Krishnamurthy. She was countering CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya on tax revision proposed in a general meeting organized at the Sathyamurthy auditorium here on April 23.

CMC is empowered by Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act to revise tax up to rupees 500. The tax revision will create problems for the people.

CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya said that the taxes of Kundapur, Karkal TMC, and Saligrama Town Panchayat are duly revised. The revision of taxes will affect only 20% of the business establishments while 80% of the people will not have any burden. Dr M T Reju then the deputy commissioner who was also the president in-charge of the CMC had proposed for the revision of taxes and the same proposal will be implemented, he added.

CMC President Meenakshi Madhav Bannaje urged the support of the members for the tax revision.

Councilor Vasanthi Shetty said that the drinking water issues are still pending; CMC Commissioner said that the pipeline issues are reported due to national highway work and the issues will be fixed.

Former CMC President Yuvraj said that a permanent solution should be sought for addressing drinking water issues. Janardhan Bhandarkar said that the people should be advised not to waste drinking water supplied by CMC for watering plants and washing cars.

Councilor Latha Anand said the waste thrown by people is reaching to the houses of others due to stray dogs. The concerned official said that a system is in force to effectively handle waste management. He urged the members for the implementation of by-laws to fine citizens throwing waste.
