Udupi Town Police Arrest Two in Rs 5 Lakh Extortion Attempt Linked to Deceased Man

Udupi: In a case involving alleged intimidation and extortion, Udupi Town Police have arrested two persons accused of threatening a family and demanding Rs 5 lakh by falsely invoking the name of a man who died eight years ago.

The arrested men have been identified as Sajid, a resident of Santosh Nagar, Kukkundje in Udupi, and Syed Saif Ahmed, 40, from Kempenahalli in Kunigal taluk of Tumakuru district.

According to the complaint, the incident began on July 2, when the complainant received a WhatsApp call from an individual speaking in Hindi. The caller allegedly claimed that the complainant’s son, Ajith Padiyar, had entered into a diamond business transaction and owed Rs 5 lakh, which needed to be paid immediately.

The family reportedly informed the caller that Ajith had died eight years earlier and that they had no knowledge of any such business dealings. However, the caller allegedly continued to insist on payment.

Later, Ajith’s other son, Amit, who is currently in Dubai, also received a WhatsApp call. During the conversation, the caller allegedly threatened to create trouble for Amit’s wife, Raksha, who was staying in their native place, if the demanded amount was not paid. Following these threats, a case was registered at the Udupi Town Police Station.

A special team was then formed to trace the accused under the supervision of Udupi Town Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad P., with Investigation PSI Ratnakar K. leading the probe. The team arrested Sajid on July 20 and Syed Saif Ahmed on August 26, after which both were produced before the court.

The court remanded the accused to judicial custody. Syed Saif Ahmed was later taken into police custody for further investigation.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, Additional Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Naik, and Udupi Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent of Police Belliyappa.

PSI Ratnakar K., police personnel Prasanna and Jeevan Kumar, Manipal Police Station staff Mallayya Hiremath and Hemanth Kumar, along with other personnel of Udupi Town Police Station, participated in the operation.
